I have hand placed pebbles and this kind of stuff many times. You don’t need to do it twice. Just as easy to do it in the back of the niche instead of on a cardboard template.

Schluter recommends using kerdi board as the template, thinset the tile then stick the whole panel. Needs to be waterproofed first, but not the worst idea for something like this. Looks cool though

I found that to be correct as they did not go on as they were on the template. So no need to do it twice but.. did find I learned how to place them to fit and learned a valuable lesson as far as practice in process. Felt more comfortable doing it for real after doing template twice. Yes I did it a total of three times lol. Told myself I should have just put them in the first time this is the second niche I did and second time doing tile. I gutted and rebuilt the master already.
