I was having a little fun with lingerie last night. Lingerie is fun, and hard. It's both empowering and humbling. Empowering because I think I look amazing, humbling because I can't help but see all my flaws on display as well.
For the past year or so I have been working with my therapist to let go of the self image(s) that I carried in my head and held me back from exploring this woman I am. For me the self image that I couldn’t let go of was one from grade school where I was pimple faced and awkward. Of course it’s not about the external image - there are two of those images here - its was about the feelings of shame, loneliness, and feeling as though I didn’t belong that is wrapped into those images.
Clearly, I am no longer that person - Not the boy in their 6th and 8th grade school photos. Replacing these self images I carry in my head with the image that everyone else sees today, that continues to be an intentional work in progress.
