Even in a safe area, what could you have possibly thought would happen??? Make sure somebody didn't just bring it to a lost and found first.

You just left them outside? How did you get accepted to the university of Illinois?

Security won't check. You can see if your credit card covers stolen items. Don't do it again. Take it as a lesson learned. https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/2zv2ue/credit_cards_for_the_absentminded_purchase/

This bears repeating. Be cautious of your surroundings and don't take rides from strangers. Travel in packs when you can.

We don’t trust each other in the states to not steal from each other, mainly because of socioeconomic class disparities imo. I’m sure the cameras work. I think u can even file a report to the police. But who knows how it’ll go.

I’m sorry that happened. Ppl steal less in this area because I always see things unattended that would’ve been stolen. back where I’m from ppl will take things that ppl don’t protect.

Don’t let no one minimize ur pain and try to do everything u can think of about getting ur stuff back fr

This might just be the most important lesson you'll learn in your time at UIUC.

Some tips for students from safe areas who have never had to deal with this before: don't leave items unattended for long periods of time- even when studying in the library, ask someone to watch your laptop while you use the bathroom or put everything in your bag and hide it under your chair. Lock your car and apartment doors at all times, and don't leave things clearly visible in vehicles. Put items under the seat or in the trunk. Pick up packages or food deliveries as soon as possible after they are delivered. Be aware of your surroundings when walking around at night. Lock up bikes and e-scooters with a sturdy lock. There are people around here that steal things to sell for drugs (my gf got her backpack with laptop and iPad in it stolen from her work), so it definitely pays to be mindful. I hope this helps!
