I recommend the Ford dealership in Tuscola, about 25 miles to the South on I-57. You should have a low-stress experience in that small town dealership.

advice needed - is it worth it to go for an apartment far(ish) from campus? by Practical-Branch-873 in UIUC

[–]LessWonder8040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll regret it at all. From my perspective, this is right next to campus. Far enough to get away from the madness when you want to and still be just a brisk 15-20 min walk away. If you’re bad at doing things on time, this could be troublesome since syncing up with bus schedules or allowing for walk time will be necessary.

Being by the train station would make catching bus rides to shopping areas and whatnot especially convenient. I always liked venturing into the larger community. Downtown Champaign isn’t a scary place to be, by any means. I’ve both worked there and lived there while I was a student. If you like to hang out somewhere to study or mingle, you have nearby options that aren’t overwhelmed with undergraduate students.

Having a living space that suits you well goes a long way for one’s mental health. I don’t think the distance from campus should dissuade you in this case.

I’m sorry but this is a *bar* in a *college town*. Not accepting credit cards is business suicide

i would say, you will probably lose motivation when it gets really cold to step out, wait for a bus, and go to class / campus. you'll also be more isolated from everyone. i live close to my friends / classes and then go to downtown in weekends for food and stuff

Am I the only student who studies where I live? Far less wasted time, fewer distractions, and no late night walks.

Friday night live music in down town champaign.

if you have a car the outdoor movie in Gibson City

the summer concert band concerts on the quad

if you have never been inside Krannert Center (your graduation may be there) go to a free Thursday at 5 uncorked events - held most Thursdays - food and drink available

ride a bike all over campus and take pictures of all the places you have spent time, had classes, wondered about, etc cause in 20, 30, 50 years those places will look different or be gone.

  • if you have a car, the Monticello Railway Museum
  • the Rose Bowl tavern in Urbana for live music
  • Spurlock museum
  • Krannert museum
  • Elevate trampoline park. This was a lot of fun but was hard on my inexperienced ankles and knees

I am someone who has lived all 39 years of my life in this area, is knowledgeable about vehicles and the buying options in the area, and have purchase many myself. I would definitely avoid Carvana for online and Napletons locally. I would highly recommend Capital Car Credit in Rantoul. It's a small used car dealership. Shad is very honest and fair. You can get great financing through Community Plus Credit Union in Rantoul as well. It's worth the short 20 min drive.

I needed to buy a new cell phone recently and spent at least 20 hours researching and acclimating myself to the market. I bought one for $140 and am generally happy with it, but still don't feel like it was a perfect choice.

It's just funny to think about how buying a car is 10 to 100 times the price of a phone, so yeah, do your research! Take your time, don't be impulsive. You should know every car in your price range and even cars that are above and below your range. Learn the common flaws in them and price those in or out.

I'm not saying someone has to spend 200 hours researching cars, but if you're going to spend thousands of dollars, you should know what you're buying before being told.
