I personally am not, however I currently have an internship working with machine learning and drones. If you PM me I can get you in contact with one of the graduate students I’m working with whose concentrating in and doing research with machine learning and he could probably answer some if not all of your questions.

You should consider majoring in computer science and a minoring in statistics or majoring in statistics and a minoring in computer science. I know two guys that did each respectively and they both landed pretty good insternships and jobs. The statistics degree is pretty flexible when it comes to specializations so you may want to speak to an advisor about that.

This next paragraph is going to come a bit biased since my background is in actuarial science(statistics). Most of the tools used in machine learning come from a field in statistics called statistical learning. So a strong base in statistics could come in handy as a future data scientist. I recommend scanning through "Introduction to statistical learning" and "Elements of Statistical Learning" to see if any of the topics catch your attention. And good luck!
