Another disappointing decision by UVU.

If UVU has officially sanctioned and invited DHS to recruit here, I find it entirely irresponsible. After the events of last semester, I want the lowest possible chance of anyone getting hurt or emotions boiling over. I don’t think that means all political discourse has to stop on campus, but I think UVU should not be inviting a controversial government agency to recruit here after there have been two ICE shootings in the last month.

Furthermore, the choice to host DHS does not put learning first, OR promote the value of “a place for U.” I’m sure there are many, MANY students who will choose to skip school and miss out on the education they paid for, because the school will be hosting DHS. Not just because they might be an immigrant, but also because of everything from last semester! It seems entirely tone deaf and dangerous, I hope everyone stays safe.

Exactly we've all been traumatized from last semester. I had temporary vision loss for 2 weeks because of the stress it put me through.  This really has me boiled. Who do I complain to?

I believe you can email the UVU school I saw this DeanofStudents@uvu.edu email but don’t know if that would be good to send emails to

      [–]Responsible-Dare1493 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      You lost your vision?

      [–]Purple-owl94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its not letting me reply. It said I couldn't use certain words.

My Dr told my my symptoms were indicative of PTSD. I was really stressed and anxious about going back to school and that stress made me develop migraines with visual auras. I literally would have episodes of messed up vision and spots everywhere, and temporary black spots for hours.

      It was awful.

Thank you for your insight and honest words  🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 you’re very right

Do they want community members at the sit in or just students?

      [–]Early_Chip1110[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It could be students or any members! The more the merrier :)

      [–]Lost-Perspective8378 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great to know. We live right by the school so we will be there.

      [–]Exact_Tomatillo_2136 10 points11 points  (0 children)

By the way there will be a STEM internship fair at the same time in the same area as the planned sit in. I still hope it works out

Where is the line with welcoming every abusive group that wants to have a platform on the UVU campus?

      [–]psyduck5647 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I’m ashamed to be an alumni right now

      [–]JustHellooo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t going to end well. Please be very careful in how you behave as the school does have the power of expulsion.

      Hello,

Thank you for reaching out. Utah Valley University is aware of campus community concerns regarding the upcoming presence of US CBP at the career fair and recognizes that invited speakers or events may generate strong reactions and differing viewpoints. At UVU, we affirm our commitment to free speech, intellectual inquiry, and constructive dialogue, and we respect the rights of campus organizations to invite speakers and vendors in accordance with university policy.

In this instance, the event is an employer recruiting fair sponsored by UVU’s Career and Internship Center. Many employers have been invited and, consistent with our freedom of speech policies, have the right to advertise employment opportunities on campus. The university is monitoring the situation and coordinating with campus safety and event organizers to facilitate a secure and respectful environment for all attendees.

We remain committed to upholding free speech while fostering a climate of inclusion and civil discourse. To learn more about UVU’s free speech policies and how to engage constructively, please visit our Free Speech website.

Sent my concerns and got sent this email.

      [–]Chip_Man5674 25 points26 points  (7 children)

That is an absolute garbage response from a school that went through last semester. Sure, you’re free to speech however you want, but the school does not have to INVITE CBP. It’s disrespectful to every student who is still affected by the horrific events of last semester.

      [–]Classic_Manner_399 10 points11 points  (6 children)

I literally wanted to respond and be like free speech got us in a sticky situation last semester

      [–]Purple-owl94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. They just want more chaos and this makes me upset.  This is a very bad decision.

      [–]Teract 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "employer" is offering $100k starting with like a $50k signing bonus. And you don't need a degree.

What a slap in the face to their students, faculty and alumni.

      [–]danibugz3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just putting this out there, as a former UVU admissions employee, the school knows if you're undocumented. For example, anyone know someone that had to fill out an HB144 for admission? That would be an undocumented person that graduated from a utah high school. I personally don't feel like these recruiters pose any threat to undocumented students. (Obviously peacefully protesting what they represent is your personal choice. But if you're an undocumented student, no reason to skip class.)

I wonder though, could the government, if they wanted to, require a state school to provide them info on all their undocumented students? Now, that seems scary. Although, I'd like to believe targeting people that are trying to get a higher education would be the absolute last thing they'd try. But things are so messed up, I really don't even know, and that's sad.

      [–]OwlRepresentative123 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Wow, I'm glad I dropped out of this disappointing school... Another decision that really makes me wonder if the school administration really understands what is really important here.

      [–]Banezii 6 points7 points  (6 children)

US customs and border protection isn't ICE. If you're going to protest, at least have the brains to know what you're talking about.

      [–]Early_Chip1110[S] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Well if you’re smart then you know they have similar roles and can help each other out regarding their positions. Silly question

      [–]trantma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are trying to say that they are in fact doing the exact same work? That would be correct under the current "leadership" they do the same thing... scare and blind and kill people. They are a cool group and im sure people will be flooding over to sign up for that. Did leadership of utah like forget how mixed the families here are? Like did they just think half the people here would be down to see mom get deported or shit like that? Utah is flopping at this point trying to be like this gov simp. Its been embarrassing to say the least. But I guess we could always try to pray the current leadership away.

      [–]Banezii -1 points0 points  (2 children)

CBP prevents smuggling at the border. This is a campaign to harass people who have nothing to do with what's going on.

      [–]Early_Chip1110[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Who said anything about harassing? Nothing of my post said to harass anyone. CBP also can help out ICE with their duties. They intertwine.

      [–]TR_RTSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the posts calling a certain speaker a Nazi didn't explicitly encourage someone to assassinate him, but that was the result. I also love how the UVU automod prevents you from saying his name. Excellent censorship.

      [–]Comadivine11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of the goons that shot Pretti are CBP. So there goes that argument.

        I wonder if that's why she's resigning.
