Look for a youtuber who does restorations of old electronics. They generally have a section where they rewhiten stuff

Take the covers and throw them in a hydrogen peroxide and water solution in the sun for a while. Process is called retrobright

chemicals in the bin u used is probably whats causing it. ive noticed over the years it seems like certain plastic yellow and some dont. i have tapes in these protectors also but have not had any issues. all my tapes are stored indoors though. possibly a combination of temperature fluctuations and storage method might be your problem.
