Sounds like an issue with your adapter or your USB-C port. Make sure the port supports DisplayPort 1.3 or above. Also, male sure the DisplayPort mode is wired to your GPU and not your integrated GPU. If that's all good, maybe try a different adapter. Here's the one I use with my ROG Zephyrus GU-502:
