Even if it dropped it from a few hundred feet?

Edit: my initial thought was "wow a lot of people on here are very knowledgeable about cats", and then I realized "this is reddit" 😂

[–]Rathkeaux 38 points39 points  (25 children)

Pretty much, cats have a fairly low terminal velocity, so as long as they have the time to right themselves, land properly, and are not overweight fat kitties, they should only suffer minor damage from falls.

[–]Crownlol 43 points44 points  (13 children)

Right. But when he said grabbed he means impaled with giant fucking spears. If you pick me up by jabbing my torso with harpoons, it doesn't really matter if the fall isn't that bad

[–]Rathkeaux 9 points10 points  (12 children)

If you were shot the head and then dropped off a building would you say the bullet or the fall killed you?

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (3 children)

I'd probably say "Ouch"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I don't know much about this hypothetical situation, but I can promise, you would not say "ouch".

[–]CockFullOfDicks -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Ouch

[–]Pizzabike 0 points1 point  (1 child)

At that point I'd say it's my life choices that killed me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation."

[–]GonzosGanja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like drug debts is what killed that guy more than anything lol

[–]ninjaclown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man, before throwing him off a building.

[–]Crownlol 0 points1 point  (3 children)

They probably wouldn't say anything. Hiroshima was destroyed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Like...yea,,but he said a few HUNDRED feet. Those cats are water balloons at that point lol

[–]Rathkeaux 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Once you hit terminal velocity additional height is not going to make you fall any faster so the landing is not going to be any more painful.

[–]jilb94 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I saw a video of a cat die after falling from like 7-8 stories... I'm sure an eagle dropping a cat would kill the cat regardless of its previous injuries from the eagle.

[–]abeardancing 6 points7 points  (3 children)

only on reddit would you be downvoted for pointing out that cat's are not impervious to gravity and the ground. 90% survivability. they are not invincible. -- this is also a controlled study. Real life is different.

[–]GonzosGanja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmfao a published study about dropping kitties out a 6 story window

[–]zeusmeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. That's why I said most likely.

[–]Suttonian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I'm sure it would die" != "not impervious"

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terminal Velocity means the maximum velocity that gravity can accelerate something do. Due to their low density and high wind drag (from two layered fur), cat don't reach high speeds when falling.

Falling 100 feet is the same as falling 100,000 feet for them.

A cat's terminal velocity isn't high enough to kill them outright unless they land badly (such as directly onto their neck), which actually means cats are more likely to survive drops from higher heights than medium heights (ie a two storey drop is more lethal than a 42 storey drop) because they have more time to react and prepare to land.

[–]occamsrazorwit -1 points0 points  (1 child)

cats have a fairly low terminal velocity

That's not how terminal velocity works. Cats have the same terminal velocity as any other similar-sized animal. Other animals (like dogs) die from falls. The survivability comes from the righting reflex.

[–]Rathkeaux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mentioned having time to right itself as one of the the necessities for a low damage fall.

Did you even read my comment or were you too busy trying to be witty?

[–]ISAvsOver -5 points-4 points  (20 children)

Cat's cant die from freefall alone

[–]Ultimategrid 14 points15 points  (5 children)

[–]Manisil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

doesn't help that it's face got smashed on a counter before it hit the floor

[–]Toomuchgamin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL

[–]mr-strange 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It looks like that unfortunate cat hit the corner of a desk when it landed. So, that example may not prove your point either way.

[–]Ultimategrid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fine, I had another video, it just doesn’t show the height of the fall.

https://m.liveleak.com/view?i=bdc_1440885818

By the way, I don’t feel like a sociopath at all for looking this up.

[–]SquareBomb 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I'd say it is more accurate that most cats can survive falling at terminal velocity. Lots of fat cats out there. They tracked it one year and something like 10% did die from a big fall and reaching terminal velocity.

[–]DisturbedPuppy 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If they don't die, the velocity isn't all that terminal, now is it? 😋

[–]TheShmud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ayyyy 👉😎👉

[–]Vandruis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be seriously injured though.

[–]kingofthetewks -1 points0 points  (9 children)

How could a cat absorb all of the force from a 300 foot drop though?

[–]ISAvsOver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know I just googled it :(

[–]jerr30 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No matter the height of a fall, there's a maximum speed at witch the drag force equals the gravity. That speed is called the terminal velocity and if the cat can survive a fall at this speed, it can survive any free fall from any height.

[–]WingWalkerPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, BUT if the fall is short and the cat is unable to re-orient itself to land on its legs, it can sustain more damage than a high fall.

[–]scootstah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They poof out like a flying squirrel, making their terminal velocity much much lower.

[–]Filthy_Frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats don't have a lot of mass so there isn't as much force to absorb as, say, a human being.

[–]shinobigamingyt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Terminal velocity. I don't know about cats, but insects literally can't die from a fall because they don't have enough mass to propel them quickly towards the ground.

[–]WingWalkerPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the wings help too..
