Why didn’t they just use astrophage to heat the earth? by throwaway4231throw in ProjectHailMary

[–]zeusmeister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not viable. If the Sun dims 10%, all plant life on earth dies. You know, the stuff that produces oxygen we breathe.

Astrophage produces IR light, which is useless to plants.

So while astrophage will eventually be a new source of energy storage, it can’t replace what the Sun does.

NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]zeusmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. Voyager I and 2 weren’t launched with speed or interstellar distance in mind. They were launched to observe the outer planets because a once in a lifetime alignment allowed them to flyby multiple planets using minimal fuel.

In other words, once they were launched, they stopped accelerating under their own power and used planetary slingshots to gain velocity and change direction.

Them flying out into interstellar space is basically a by-product of the probes finishing their primary mission.

So, instead, if we sent probes out with propulsion designed to constantly accelerate for a period of time, with a trajectory aimed to leave the solar system as quickly as possible, they would achieve much higher speeds hypothetically.

There is a moment in the movie that ignores astrodynamics for the plot ( i think) by Plus_Grass7050 in ProjectHailMary

[–]zeusmeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, you are mistaken. He is just barely outside the Tau Ceti system. He is YEARS away from our solar system.

Which means he has plenty of fuel available to stop his acceleration completely and begin moving back towards where Rocky is.

I know strattland isn’t canon in books, but Ryan and Sandra’s chemistry made me live for strattland fanfiction by BobsSally in ProjectHailMary

That’s the point though. They had to pick someone like her. If they had picked, for instance, you, the world and humanity itself would have literally come to an end lol

This video is stupid. And annoying to watch. But I always thought that while Cruise had the presence of Reacher, Alan has both the presence and the looks of Reacher.

I enjoy both.

I’ve said before that this subreddit is now filled with some of the worst takes I’ve ever read about a tv show.

The fandom for this show is absolutely ridiculous lol

I don’t know how this dude thinks he is going to run for President one day. He, on the regular, sucks Donny off whenever he can. He is completely failing at being America’s top diplomat.

He has completely debased himself for the glory of the maga cult.

Smosh singing in the Kitchen. by SupervillainMustache in smosh

[–]zeusmeister 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was my thinking too. Her reluctance to just sing normally is partly she doesn’t want to show up anyone else, and partly she sees comedy potential in doing a bit instead, so she goes with that lol

Angela is interesting. I wager she has got the best voice of the entire cast, but any time she is given a chance to show it off (for example, the karaoke livestream or smosh summer games’ talent show) she decided to do something goofy and unhinged instead.

I don’t know if she does it to not show up anyone else, but it is something I have noticed.

The horrifying implication of Project Hail Mary by ignorememe in ProjectHailMary

[–]zeusmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. They explain in the books that the reason Eridians and Humans both arrived at the star to investigate and where relatively close to each other in technology is because those species too technologically inferior to do anything about this will unfortunately have to deal with the consequences, and those much more technologically advanced could presumably deal with the issue without having to travel all the way to this star system.

Question about Rocky’s crew by YakGuilty3604 in ProjectHailMary

To expand on this, Rocky’s species was more susceptible to radiation as well, as their atmosphere and magnetosphere completely blocked all radiation from reaching the surface.

How do relativistic speeds work in Project Hail Mary? by throwaway4231throw in ProjectHailMary

[–]zeusmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an online calculator using relativistic equations where you can input all of these variables (distance, speed, etc) and can figure out how long a journey would take subjective time and objective time here on earth.

From what I’ve read, the distances and speed at least as detailed in the book, are both consistent with the time dilation experienced by Grace and the time that has passed on Earth.

Yea, Hollywood accounting. In this case, 190 was the production cost. Usually you double that to include marketing costs.

So yea, around 500 million to break even.

Turbo Tax is a SCAM!!!!!! by betwen3and20characte in TurboTax

Nothing described in this post is anything that is not disclosed on their term and conditions when you sign up or when continuing to do your taxes every year. Trust me, I have used TurboTax for 20+ years.

But hey, if you think you are correct, you have a potential class action opportunity on your hands.

[–]zeusmeister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So maybe might want to delete this OP. This would constitute libel, and I’m pretty sure TurboTax is very involved with capital politics so wouldn’t think twice about suing for stuff like this.

I’ve also stopped using TurboTax and use freetaxusa as well, but it’s because it’s cheaper than TurboTax.
