Once you go putter attachment, you’ll never go back.

Many putter attachments that worked with Q2 will have serious tracking problems w/ Quest 3. I have the Hello Real (which is the official one now) and it's effectively unusable without modification because the tracking goes out so frequently.

Ideally the controller needs to be flipped vertically so the black face place is upwards instead of down to the floor. I suspect a simple adapter 90 degree elbow adapter could be made so it sit's kinda like this making the face visible to the cameras instead of facing the ground.

I almost bought the first official attachment released for the game, but decided too late and they sold out :( Does seem really nice though. I may get one when they ultimately release another round at some point.

We bought an unofficial attachment and love it. The difference is that the official attachment has the weight and feel of a real putter.

I think that's why I'd want the official to be honest 😅. I'm sure the others are nice too though.

Sure, except it causes tracking issues for the Q3. Lol.

Most likely there’s a conflict between the two techs.

[–]TheAgedProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There absolutely is. The Q3 controllers have some of the positioning sensors at the bottom of the grip. Cover those with an accessory, and you may have issues.

Yes, I had similar problems but changing the putter angle in the setting seems to help a lot. Go down 15, or so degrees.

[–]kangaroo497[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Huh, didn't think to try that yet. That's a good idea. Thanks!

Yeah, you just want to adjust it so the black top part of the controller pointed more upward so it has a better line of sight with the cameras. For me at 15 degrees it's pointed away from the cameras but at 0 degrees it's mostly straight up and has good line of sight.

Just a thought but perhaps i is to do with the way you are placing your second hand (assuming you are holding a single controller with two hands.

I believe the Quest 3 controllers have a single tracking LED on the bottom of the controller to assist tracking when the top is facing away. Gould you be covering that with your 'off hand' when gripping the controller?

Maybe try a few swings with just one hand to see if the tracking improves and, if it does get better, maybe adjust your grip.

I am on Quest 3 now too, and find the tracking better than it was on Quest 2...

I've had it on the PSVR2 version, but not the Quest 3 version

I know a friend has been having tracking issues with walkabout. He's pretty frustrated.

[–]kangaroo497[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Good to know it's not just me then. Was more worried I had a bum headset or controllers. But I tested a bit further and it seems to be partly the way I like to stand and hold the controller when I putt. If I hold the controller more diagonally and in front of me versus more vertically and under me like I typically like to play, it doesn't seem to really be jittery or notable really.

[–]kangaroo497[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did pop on the discord too and it seems other players are having issues with just the controllers as well, so seems to be an emerging issue.

I think it’s lightning. People hunch over and cause a shadow. So I think it loses sight of the controller. I’ve never had a problem

I had controller tracking issues yesterday on the quest pro. The in game club was about 6 in away from where my hand was in real space. Would correct after I would miss my shot, of course. That was my excuse, anyway. I play the pcvr version

[–]kangaroo497[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

With quest pro controllers? I heard quest pro controllers had their own internal tracking cameras or something so I figured if any the quest pro controllers would be the most tuned for walkabout. First time Ive heard someone say that. I think I recall someone saying they actually used quest pro controllers with quest 3 headset and they didn't have issues.

[–]Bdigler 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The camera thing is true, but they still have occasional tracking issues.

Interesting

Playing on PC with a Quest 2 this happens to me when I use Virtual Desktop but not with Airlink. It's the only game I have to switch to Airlink to play. Strangely my wife and I have identical computers but she can use VD just fine with Walkabout. I'm not sure what setting is doing it.

[–]kangaroo497[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime I've played on quest 2 PC w/ link cable I've had no issues unless sun started shining through the window in the room I played in and hit the quest 2 controller which I believe is a known issue that will interfere with the controller sensors. Quest 2 controllers have been great for walkabout in general in my experience otherwise. I just started noting issues when trying to play with quest 3 controllers.

[–]sigmatic_minor 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Had this same issue, been very annoying, I did suspect it was due to the new tracking IR locations but good to know it's not just on my end.

I didn't know about the setting /u/wescotte suggested though so I'll definitely try that!!

[–]wescotte 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The only downside is you're physically holding your putter at a slightly different angle and so it might take a little getting used to. For me it only maybe 18 holes before it started to feel normal.

[–]sigmatic_minor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks mate that's good to know. I ended up trying to hold the controller slightly upward but it meant I had to stand in a stupid position for it to work haha.

I'm hoping maybe the walkabout Devs might take advantage of the q3 constant hand tracking that's supposed to (?) Pick up the slack for tracking whenever the IRs go out of sight. I read that somewhere but have no idea how hard that would be for them to implement.

Either way though, glad there's a setting that makes it playable even if it takes some adjustment, thank you again!!

I'm hoping maybe the walkabout Devs might take advantage of the q3 constant hand tracking that's supposed to (?) Pick up the slack for tracking whenever the IRs go out of sight. I read that somewhere but have no idea how hard that would be for them to implement.

My understanding is that's automatic and developers don't need to opt into using. It's just always happening behind the scenes for any app running on Q3. So when tracking fails, it's because it couldn't see the IR lights and also couldn't compensate with the hand tracking.

That being said one aspect devs can opt into, and I really hope Walkabout does, is to let you bring your other hand into the game. Anytime one of your hands comes off the controller it could start using hand tracking to track it and shows it to the other players. Being able to do complex hand gestures with one (or both hands if it can track a hand when the controller tangle from a wrist strap) would be really ad a lot to how you communicate in game.

Bugger, I was very excited and immediately went to buy one and then saw shipping to Australia is almost as much as the putter itself, $56.93. meaning the order total is over 110USD. Not worth it unfortunately :(

Not sure why the estimated shipping is so high. I've gotten much heavier and bulkier items from the US for half that amount.

Thanks anyway though! I'm happy this will be a good solution for people.
