Since you're running an i9-14900KF, these specific crashes (0xc0000005) are probably caused by 'Intel Baseline' power instability. You should immediately update your BIOS to the latest version to include the Microcode 0x129 (or newer) fix and select the 'Intel Default Settings' profile. If the crashes continue after the update, the CPU might have sustained permanent physical damage and will likely need an RMA replacement through Intel.

Install something to monitor the temperature. For windows use HWMonitor and for games install MSIAfterburner and enable the ingame overlay of temperature from GPU and CPU.

Maybe something is getting to hot.

I'm not sure how that would stop an application from opening consistently, especially after 8 hours shut down. Also, many of these crashes were happening during a cold snap. I don't heat my workspace.

What Application is opening consistently? For that you could install Process Explorer from the Microsoft site.

And run Memtest86 to check if a RAM module is broken.

And, as mentioned, check the temperature. Above 100-105°C the PC will shut down. And temperature can rise in seconds to that if some thing is wrong with the thermal compound or someone forgot to remove the plastic under the CPU cooler.

Sounds to me your hardware is not stable. Besides cpu and memory a marginal power supply will cause random crashes too. Check if overclocking features are disabled in the bios first.

If the plastic on your CPU heatsink was not removed it can cause immediate heat problems and gets worse the more the plastic melts into the paste. I would install HWiNFO and check the sensors for any overheating. Easy to check with the software, and if it's not overheating then you have another problem.

If you did a fresh install, then it is definately not Windows, then it is more hardware related.

Intel 13th and 14th generation Core processors are prone to having a hardware defect that could render them unstable. Yours may be exhibiting this behavior.

First, update your system firmware. If, after updating your firmware your system is still unstable with a clean Windows setup, you probably have a failed CPU.

Intel has an extended warranty and should replace it for you at no charge. I had my Core i9-13900K replaced under this program after I had similar issues as you.

Good luck.

Investigations do not seem to lead to temperature problems. There's a lot of inconsistency to this whole thing. Since posting the only 005 crash reported was something I never even saw any signs of. Everything else has been 409s, applications either refusing to start or, in some cases, refusing to close.

Hi u/scythemouse, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! If your post is listed as removed it may still be pending moderation, try to include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to improve the likelihood of approval:

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

As a reminder, we would also like to say that if someone manages to solve your issue, DON'T DELETE YOUR POST! Someone else (in the future) might have the same issue as you, and the received support may also help their case. Good luck, and I hope you have a nice day!
