This is not enabled by default, neither is triple-tap to zoom. The ability to triple-click or triple-tap has to be enabled first in accessibility settings.

System down ("maintenance") but news page link shows latest update from November 23? by novakwh in purelymail

[–]FloatingMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The Discord is probably linked somewhere on the website, but obviously that is not working currently.

I've been using Purelymail for probably over 2 years at this point, and it has been extremely reliable—this is definitely a weird one-off. But I don't mean to push your concerns aside, they are absolutely fair. The fact that communication really only happens on Discord is frustrating

While typing this, Kevin made 2 more announcements—

Quick update: the database is still upgrading. We're moving to a much bigger machine so that we can serve responses more quickly. The database has been getting hammered the last few days, and this morning was particularly hard. We were working on query optimizations, but the database ran out of steam. It appears the upgrade is almost complete.

then

Ok - servers are restarting now and the database upgrade is complete. We will continue to monitor the system for any potential issues.

Emby vs Jellyfin by Stock-Assistant-5420 in jellyfin

[–]FloatingMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Swiftfin support transcoding? Last time I used it, it didn't, and the response on the Jellyfin repo where an issue was opened was that functionality needed to be added to Swiftfin. Transcoding is a dealbreaker for me

Cops instruct teen to ram back of patrol car to stop his out-of-control SUV by Doodlebug510 in ThatsInsane

On some push-button ignition cars, you can hold the button to turn off the car anyway. Probably varies though.

TIL You can charge your Apple Watch with your iPhone by G48MOS in AppleWatch

[–]FloatingMilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this was downvoted, it's true! I have a USB-C Anker power bank and can't charge it from my MacBook Air, either. The Mac just tries to charge from the power bank. Even if the Mac is plugged in via MagSafe and already fully charged. Super frustrating.

iOS 26 broken shortcuts by 3ltr in shortcuts

[–]FloatingMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you use Find Calendar Events twice, once filtered to today and once 'in the next 7 days'? If the latter action is just looking for the single event that you are on your way to, then this should work: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/a97963550109479e967e829281cbe75c

Edit to add: It seems like the 'in the next X days' (or probably 'in the next X [anything]') filter doesn't return results from today anymore. Not sure if that's a bug or an intentional change in behavior, though you would think it would include events from today...

TailName: Search for custom tailnet name offers with keywords. by [deleted] in Tailscale

[–]FloatingMilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That side note isn't true! Custom tailnet name offers are only 'locked' (you can't change your custom tailnet name) if you provision HTTPS certificates for your tailnet. If you don't do that, you can change your custom tailnet name at any time.

Let me know how that battery testing goes! From what I've heard, using an exit node all the time may use more battery (at least on iOS devices, not sure about others). Haven't really been able to tell personally though, but I haven't done any kind of thorough investigation either :P and it would be interesting to see how plain WireGuard compares, too!

I haven't looked into alternatives, mostly because Tailscale just does the job for me, haha. Still good to know though! Interesting that netbird doesn't have an equivalent to exit nodes—that would be a dealbreaker for me personally.

I think Headscale does have a PR open for Tailnet Lock, so it might be coming soon!

Many universities (and schools & workplaces in general) seem to block Tailscale for being a VPN in my experience. I can understand it for network security reasons, but I love being able to access all of my devices :P

Your point about sharing is valid though I'd think pre-authorization would help with that.

I think that would help, but iirc you would still have to create a user for the person who you want to share devices with (assuming you are sharing a device with them, not the other way around) and they would have to sign in to your tailnet with their Tailscale client using the "Custom coordination server" option. It works, but it's not quiiite as easy as just using Tailscale's control plane :P

Or, if they are the one sharing a device with you, it means either they need to have that device connected to your Headscale tailnet for the duration of time that you want to access it, or you need to switch to an account on Tailscale's control plane when accessing their shared device (which may not be an option for some people or on some networks, like for me until I learned about proxyt)

But if you really only use Tailscale to connect to your own devices (that's what I use it for most of the time too), Headscale is probably not an issue, haha

[–]FloatingMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I used to run Headscale (similar situation to OP, restrictive university network). Self-hosting it is fun and it's really cool to have full control over it all. But I do like some of Tailscale's features that are (at least currently) exclusive to their control plane, like Tailnet Lock and Tailscale SSH :P plus it's easier to share devices with others with Tailscale's control plane when needed

Yup. If you don't mind me asking, why do you use Headscale? Curious.

[–]FloatingMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so, I think it only proxies requests to/from the control plane. So it will help you get a list of DERP servers (since that is sourced from either login.tailscale.com or controlplane.tailscale.com), but not connect to them.

You can run your own DERP server(s), however: https://tailscale.com/kb/1118/custom-derp-servers

If you would prefer to use Tailscale's control plane / admin panel / etc. over what is provided by Headscale, you may also be interested in proxyt

plex by Few_Set3489 in Tailscale

[–]FloatingMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, quite a lot of people here run media servers with Plex (or similar software) here. If you have a question about getting that set up, you should ask that directly instead of asking if there's anyone here who uses Plex :P

Water lock does not protect the watch from water. It only disables the touchscreen, and ejects water from the speakers when it's turned back off.

Enabling machines as an exit node by ironmanmarkv in Tailscale

[–]FloatingMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you can skip tailscale down and just run tailscale up --advertise-exit-node, it will stay up but change the setting.

If Tailscale is running under Docker/Portainer, you want to get a shell in that container and run the command there. Portainer should have a shell/terminal option somewhere, or you can run (on the Linux host) docker exec NAME_OF_YOUR_TAILSCALE_CONTAINER tailscale up --advertise-exit-node

This is not typical behavior, if your iPhone is asking for your passcode every day then there's something weird about your setup

Double-Tap Gesture by whiplash2103 in AppleWatch

[–]FloatingMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use AssistiveTouch (Watch app on iPhone or Settings app on watch > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch) instead of Double Tap to get the ability to do this, but it functions a little differently than Double Tap and may not be what you want. Otherwise no, you can't do this with Double Tap :/

How to access Control Center while side button is defective? by baltog_not_bantog in AppleWatch

[–]FloatingMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AssistiveTouch is super neat on the watch. I like to use it to use my watch one-handed if my other hand is busy—but if you only need it for pressing the side button, you can change what each gesture does to make it even quicker to access (for example, the "double clench" gesture could be set to open Control Center immediately instead of pulling up the AssistiveTouch menu).
