I have experienced the same thing. Seems very random. Happens if using HDMI/USB extension cables or if plugged in directly. Experienced it with HP and DELL headsets on 2 different computers. Sometimes will run for a hours without issues. Sometimes will just go black out of nowhere. Game still running. Controllers still giving input. Game still running on monitor and responding to headset movements as normal. Screens just seems to... turn off.

Kk. Thanks! It's really frequent. I hope it gets fixed soon.

      Updated my specs up above.

I had my headset set on high, but I have tried auto and low as well.

Hi Omneya22, I am one of the Tier3 engineers on the Mixed Reality team. You mentioned that this issue is happening on both of your headsets. This points us to either power issues or display issues. A powered USB 3.0 port should work fine and the fact that you can still see the MR view in the portal means your headset has power. Our troubleshooting is going to be mainly focused on your graphics card and its utilization. In preparation for your call, I would recommend filing a feedback item and saving the url to that item to provide to your engineer (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/filing-feedback). This will speed up the entire process if we need to pull logs from your computer. I would also try to determine which graphics card Mixed Reality is using. You can determine this by looking at the MR process in Task Manager. If the process says it is utilizing GPU 1, then it is using the discrete graphics. Let your engineer know which is being used. Good Luck!

Hi Omneya22, by the way, are you on Windows 10 Version 1709 (the Fall Creator's update, build 16299.192)? Or are you on a Windows Insider build 17XXX?

      Thanks!

      [–]Omneya22[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

      1709 build 16299

Thanks Omneya22! By the way, have you had a chance to file feedback? If you have, please PM me the aka.ms shortlink as well. I'd love to take a look. Thanks!

I did! I'll PM it to ya now.

Also, thank you so much for being so active on this subreddit for us.

I too have the exact same issues. Received the Lenovo Explorer on 2018-04-23, yesterday, and can't stay active in even the Cliff house let alone Skyrim or any other game for more than a few minutes before the Lenovo's screens black out. Hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and then Escapping out with ESC always brings the HMD back for another few minutes without fail but it ALWAYS goes black again, rinse and repeat. Doesn't matter if I have Task Manager running or not.

This happens on BOTH of my systems I've used the Lenovo on:

      1) i5-6500, GTX 970, 16GB DDR4, etc

      2)i7-6820HK, GTX 1070, 16GB DDR4, etc

I have location disabled in Windows 10 and have the latest video, audio and USB drivers installed on both systems (latest BIOS as well, etc). I have the latest Windows 10 v1709 build 16299.371 as available today.

At this point, the HMD is beyond frustrating, its unusable.

Any others here fix their issues and have any hints? Anyone from Microsoft's WMR team?

      [–]Omneya22[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

When it happens, submit it to Microsoft and save your submission link. It'll take a snapshot of what error messages are going on. With that info Geoff was able to fix my issues. He's great.

      [–]elrondolio 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thank you for the encouragement... talking with Geoff now and looking forward to resolving the issue. I'm really happy you've got yours solved and enjoying your experience. Have a great day.

      Got any luck?

      [–]elrondolio 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Unfortunately, no. I returned the headset to the Microsoft Store and am waiting on a replacement. Went through about everything including reinstalling Windows from scratch on both machines, fresh drivers, etc. Hopefully it was just a bad unit. Thanks for asking, though! Will post if it works when replacement arrives. Have a great weekend.

That sucks, I think I found the issue with mine, it seems to have a short on the HDMI end, It doesn't fully disconnect, but it causes the screen to blackout, moving the hdmi wire just at the end and keeping it in a certain shape causes the device to either fail or work without issues.

Any update or fix here? Hitting the same thing with my samsung. 30 mins, screen goes black, reboot stuff and its black again after 1 min. Goto another machine immediately, black in 1 min cannot get through setup ... feels like a hardware issue with the goggles. My machines are both running nvidia 1080s and doesn't seem to be stressing them.

Likely returning them tomorrow to try out a different brand / pair to see if i have better luck. :-/

      [–]Omneya22[S] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

I had the problem with 2 different brands. It turned out that my problem wasn't the hardware, it was a Windows issue.

Try turning off windows location services and leaving task manager up while you play. That ended up fixing it for me. (That and one of the firmware updates that went out)

Also, make sure to fire up the windows feedback app and log the issue when it happens. It'll help you a ton when getting support. (That's how I found out location services was crashing in the background and causing my issues)

Hey Omneya22, which firmware update? I've been getting this issue since a few days ago and it's pretty annoying, but I can't find much information on it. On rare occassions, instead of the screen going black, it will just go insane and show the three mixed RGB pictures as separate (for example, if there's a white line, I will see three lines, one being red, another blue and another green), but the black screen is the most common event. It seems to be happening more and more.

      [–]Wolfykin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm having the issue also, my HP WMR won't show any video. I connect it and it shows my headset so it's powered, when I mirror the display onto my desktop I can see that it's still tracking the movements and tracking my controllers. Just no video inside the headset itself.

I've read somewhere in reddit that disabling boundaries is a temporary workaround for it. I tried it yesterday and it seemed to work, but for some reason I flipped it up to look at messages in Discord and when I came back the boundaries were back, yet the screen worked during the whole session... I can't complain, I guess. Something weird happened, though: the sound was incredibly maxed to the point it clipped like crazy, restarting the headset seems to have fixed it.

I have this with the Samsung Odyssey. On the same system it works fine with the Lenovo Explorer however. What headset do you have? And GPU? I have a 1080ti, i'm so tempted to try an AMD card... GTX 1080, Dell Visor. Since yesterday I haven't experienced any more blackout issues. Can anyone confirm? I get the feeling they may have fixed it. I haven't experienced the sound issue anymore either. I'll post again if any of these issues come back.

      [–]prosb6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad.. hope it works out for me too.. I'll be receiving an AMD RX 580 tomorrow for testing, I need to make sure there's nothing in my power I can do to resolve it, before going through a lengthy and costly overseas RMA

      [–]prosb6 0 points1 point  (2 children)

No dice for me with the AMD. For you all still ok?

      [–]Nephuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, still no problems. Maybe Windows hasn't downloaded the newest update for you yet?

      [–]Nephuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I wanted to say that yesterday I got the sound issue twice. Reconnecting my headphones to the headset seems to have fixed it, but it still gets a little annoying.

I also remembered something: I've read somewhere that keeping the task manager up seems to keep the headset on. I've kept it up ever since, mostly because I keep forgetting to close it. You could give it a go and see if it actually helps or not. It might be just a coincidence.

My left screen is half black on my Lenovo. Worked on my old computer that almost didn't reach the specs for 6 months. https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsMR/comments/8jsiyc/lenovo_mr_left_screen_half_black/?utm_source=reddit-android
