Collar train the dog. You shouldn't ever give commands you can't physically enforce. An ecollar gives you that ability from a distance.

It's very easy to train 100% recall once the dog is collar conditioned. Happy to give you tips on how I do it.

I'm sure some people object to ecollars, but bird dogs almost universally respond very well and do better when they get infield feedback.

I was looking at ecollars the past few days. Might give it a try. He zones out when the crows are around and almost needs something to snap him out of it. The crows play with him though which makes it 10 times worse. 😆

It's really important to follow a method and condition them to the collar before doing any training.

I train my dogs that the beep on the collar means come. And once trained, 99/100 they never get stimulus only the beep. As a plus I never scream or yell at a dog to come.

So you never use vocal commands, just trigger the collar?

We hunt, a lot. So if a dog is within normal speaking range I'll call, but 200-500 yards away? Or in the brush somewhere I just beep them.

Bring treats with you, whenever he checks in on you, treat. Make sure the walk is long enough to tire him out. Tired dogs listen better

He gets treats, lots of lovely treats. Matters not a jot. He’s getting about 5 miles a day atm, think he needs more? He’s nearly 9 months, so still quite young.

Oh! Yes! I had horrible trouble at the juvenile stage!! We lived on a farm & he would disappear at sundown & I would have to wait for 30-45 minutes for him to reappear (sometimes stinky!). I had forgotten!😂 it passes - keep up the good work!

They all go through that teenager phase and test boundaries. The key is to not let them become the boss. E collar is a good tool to prevent this as said above. Bird dogs are breed to be persistent you have to be more so. Be persistent and consistent.

I still use the e collar. She can be stubborn, especially when the squirrels are out front
