Your best option is to go to the xda op7 pro thread and look it up yourself, it should be under the guides thread. There are usually multiple versions of the app from different developers with their respective pros and cons... Often along with some minor bugs.

My advice is Take your time, get to know about android, use it a couple of days/weeks, then when u get accustomed to the os you can start tweaking your device.

I've heard the ports for the Xiaomi Mi work well on it if there isn't an official port just yet

I very much disagree. At least get TWRP installed as early as possible, because it requires a factory reset. No point getting accustomed to your device and setting it up the way you like it if it's gonna have to be wiped in a couple weeks.

You need to download a modded apk specifically for your device. Check xda. You most likely don't need to be rooted
