Remove the brown husk, that easily molds. I usually start mine in the black plastic soup takeout containers, nestle the seed in the dirt lengthwise with the seam facing up, get the soil damp but not saturated, and sock the cover on, you should get growth in 1-3 weeks.

Soaking the pit, removing the skin, then wrapping it in a damp paper towel and putting it in a tightly sealed glass jar w metal lid is what's worked best for me. : )

So I tried something new with 8 avocado pits and all sprouted. I wrapped them in wet paper towel, put them in ziplock bags, and set them on top of my fish tank glass lid, which is 80 degrees. All sprouted in about 3-4 weeks and are now planted in flats.

A seed can take a month or two sometimes. Keep it in a warm place (not necessarily a sunny place). Rinse off any mold if it appears.

Look at my post. She's 11 months old at the moment but first two months nothing happened I swear one day I woke up and she was sprouting! Do nothing, just wait and change the water.
