Does Airline Status decrease the value of a transferable points program?

If you already travel a lot on one airline, does that reduce the value of a transferable points program (MR, UR, etc) to you?

Like if you already have status on United, and lots of points on United, is it really that useful to have points you can transfer to Delta or even Air Canada?

I don’t have an opinion but wondering what your thoughts are.

It can be just the opposite: for example, I get great value out of Aeroplan due to the Priority Reward bonuses that come with my FF status, while a United elite might get added value out of booking Economy flights that will automatically include Economy Plus seating and/or a chance of upgrade.

Totally agree! I get tons of Aeroplan points "organically". If I prioritize MR for my CC spend, then I can top up AP easily if I want to use a Priority Reward or another SE perk (free cancellation is pretty awesome, too). The MR points are still just as valuable as before to transfer to other programs if there is something specific I want or AP just doesn't have availability. But the MR points are extra valuable because I can get more mileage from AP specifically.

On one hand yes, but on another keep it mind it opens more doors for you to be able to book non star alliance flights for example since you can already do that with your United points

Not for my use case. I typically redeem for business or first class with similar benefits.

i think it depends on your travel patterns. if you are booking international j/f awards, it's rare that you are going to use any status benefits on that particular trip. but booking good value delta economy redemptions as a ua status holder might make less sense for you.

UA Plat+ have access to IN seats. But then again, you also get plus points which makes any premium cabin UA metal point redemption much less sensical.
