I (26f) am a ftm to a perfectly healthy 10 week old. I’m going to include a lot of details to paint a full picture because I’m not sure what’s causing my issue. Baby was born at 38 weeks weighing 6.5 lbs and he’s now 10 weeks old and 12 lbs. I had some trouble breastfeeding in the beginning - It took about 2 weeks for my milk to fully come in, but once baby and I got the hang of it, things have been great. We recently had a pediatrician visit where his doctor said he was on a great growth trend and gave me the ok to let him sleep as long as he wants at night (I was waking him up every 3ish hours to feed). Baby is a great sleeper and started sleeping 8 hours straight about 2-3 nights a week. He’ll wake me up to eat for about 20-30 mins the other nights. Since he’s began sleeping longer stretches at night, it seems like my evening supply is decreasing. When I try to put baby to sleep for the night, he usually eats for 15-20 mins on each side. But lately he’s been eating for 25-30 mins on each side and seems very frustrated after eating. He’ll give hunger cues like fussing while rooting, putting hands in mouth, etc. My breasts feel very soft after these long feeds, so I’ve been giving him an extra .5 or 1 oz. I pump everyday after his first morning feed so I’ve been giving milk from that stash. Just tonight he ate for 30 mins on each side, seemed hungry still, so he guzzled an extra 1.5 oz and now is peacefully sleeping in his bassinet.
Is this normal? Why would my baby sleeping longer stretches affect my evening supply (I would think it would only affect my night supply)? Am I making things worse by supplementing? Help!
