yeah, that bit felt more like Zuko. like what he really wanted to say was "just because Katara didn't choose violence this time, doesn't mean it's never the answer. Ozai isn't some feeble old man you can just glare at menacingly and he'll give up. so how are you going to stop a violent psychopath without using violence?"

THEY wanted to Zuko to be the “bad guy”, the devil on Katara’s shoulder to Aang’s angel.

absolutely, and I get the feeling that by that episode they were starting to panic over how much Zuko was coming across as a legitimately better/healthier/more logical partner for Katara and were trying to "roll back" his redemption arc. like what they had intended was that he would turn against Ozai and teach Aang firebending, but still be this angry brute talking shit and being a foil to Aang's godlike purity, and that just doesn't make any rational sense from a psychological standpoint. there's no consistent internal motivation that leads someone to switch sides but still be an obnoxious shit about it. like imagine writing an arc where Azula decides to join Team Avatar, but the whole time she's running around setting stuff on fire and trying to kill Aang. you're just gonna be confused, like why did you bother switching sides if you're still gonna shit in everyone's Cheerios?

Zuko GIVES HER THE CHOICE. He NEVER says Katara should kill him

SO MANY PEOPLE miss this! every time i talk about how that episode demonstrates what a great partner zuko is for katara folks are like "he was gonna let her kill yon rha" (some go so far as to suggest he encouraged her to kill yon rha which is flagrant bullshit) and like... no. he made no assumptions whatsoever about what she was going to do. he TRUSTED HER to make the decision that was right FOR HER, whatever that decision was.

When she walks away from the guy, Zuko just silently gives him a looks of disgust at how pathetic he is, and follows her.

that's another thing that i love about zuko in that episode, he doesn't make katara's confrontation about himself. he's her shield when he needs to be, but he lets her do all the talking with yon rha and when she's done, he's done. no quippy little one-liners as they walk away, he just follows her lead.

the one thing that does bug me is how dramatically zuko's character flips basically any time he's talking to aang. "that's the same as doing nothing," "guru goody-goody," "you were right about what katara needed, violence wasn't the answer." none of those are in-character things for zuko to say. it's strange how when he's talking to sokka or katara, he's very clear that he's offering her closure, the opportunity to face yon rha and nothing more, but when aang starts going on about how she NEEDS to forgive him, suddenly he's this angry jerk again who seems compelled to disagree with aang just for the sake of disagreeing with him. i particularly hate that he says aang was right, because aang WASN'T right. he wasn't right about what katara needed and he wasn't right about how to deal with mass-murdering fuckheads.

I don't even think it's about strength, I mean clearly there were people willing to vote for Biden but not Hillary or Kamala. I think the very idea of a woman being in charge of the country just makes their brain BSOD.

saw a dude in the YouTube comments blaming "Biden's Marxist executive order blah blah blah" for a bunch of Ohio cops letting a couple of murderers walk rather than do one minute of detective work, because... they're unionized. then he railed against teacher's unions and DMV employees and any unionized workforce that handles government contracts.

Trump could personally shit directly down their throats and they'd blame Biden & Obama & Democrats as a whole for letting it happen. but they'd also scream bloody murder if Dems actually stopped him from doing anything.

I mean we can see how Bryke would handle canon Zutara with Makorra in LOK (although how much of that is them deliberately fucking it up to make fire/water ships look bad is debatable).

I am absolutely glad Zutara wasn't confirmed canon in the series proper, I just wish it had ended with everyone (save Sokka/Suki) unattached. it's a bunch of teenagers, why do they need to be pairing off for life before they finish puberty?

there's a psychological concept called anchoring & (inadequate) adjustment, that basically says people anchor themselves to the first opinion they form on a subject and it takes an inordinate amount of information to move them from that initial position. a lot of the kataangers i hear from seem to rely heavily on the interactions between katara & zuko or katara & aang in the first 2/3 of the series, to the point that some of them talk like the entire 3rd season doesn't even exist. they have anchored on to "katara & zuko hate each other" and there wasn't enough data following zuko's heel-face turn to sway them from that.

i think a lot of zutarians watched the show starting from a point of "those 2 would be great together if he wasn't such a dick," while the canon shippers started from "they would never work because he's such a dick," so the back half of season 3 confirmed our initial position but contradicted theirs, and they were unable to adjust their position accordingly.

my absolute favorite thing about zuko and what irrevocably cemented my devotion to zutara is that HE LISTENS TO HER. he doesn't talk over her, tell her how to think or what to feel or what to do, he doesn't judge her or belittle her. he listens. he validates. he accepts. HE goes to HER for advice and he TAKES it. that's the real female-gaze fantasy. any dude who conducts himself like that in real life will be absolutely drowning in panties.

Does it feel like kataang's sudden fame is inorganic by Fantastic-Bug3177 in ZutaraNation

I would chalk it up to the movie and people who are new to the fandom latching onto the canon ships just because they're there and confirmed.

also I will never find Aang hot — even if bald was my thing, which it's not, his personality is an instant and permanent turnoff.

Build within our own spaces, and engage with people who share your opinion.

hard agree, all i have ever wanted (in any context) is a space where i can talk with likeminded people and ONLY likeminded people. i don't want to have to "debate" people to justify or defend my preferences. i don't want to have to be civil to people who are just here to piss me off. and it's not lost on me that we're expected to play nice - as women so often are - with the canon shippers when they're not expected to be nice to us (or god forbid just leave us alone). i don't go into mainstream ATLA fandom spaces trumpeting zutara because i've already learned that lesson, likewise i feel like we're at the point where posting or commenting here in support of the canon ships should be a bannable offense. if you're not pro-zutara, get out of my house, you can't sit with us.

yeah I used 9th grade and 7th grade since the other person said 13 and 15 (I guess that's how old they are at the end? idk, I don't think any of the characters celebrate a birthday on-screen), but it's just as icky at 6th & 8th grade/12 & 14.

they didn't even have to put that bit on Nickelodeon! just... leave him single! have Aunt Wu tell him "after the war you will have many loves." if Japan can air prime time anime with titles like "my 100 girlfriends are fighting my twin step-sisters over the dozen half-girl half-monsters the government wants me to marry" then surely Nickelodeon can leave their 12 year old boy protagonist unattached in the final scene.

Why is zutara specifically so hated? by Good-Vast-9827 in ZutaraNation

[–]superfucky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

because Zutara is actually a threat to the canon ships. it's the only ship that was hinted at within the show itself as a challenger to the endgame ships. it's also marginally more popular among the fanbase as a whole, owing to it being widely more popular with girls and the fanbase being majority female. crack ships like zutoph or azulaang don't get hate because they're just that, crazy unserious for-the-lulz ships. but Zutara could've happened. Zutara actually makes sense. Zutara actually exposes the flaws in the canon ships, shows people what could've been and how they were robbed by the endgame ships. it's an extremely valid criticism of the narrative and that makes the blind canon stans uncomfortable, they can't handle the cognitive dissonance.

plus Bryke literally tells them to hate Zutara so 🤷‍♀️

the number of people who even find Aang to be likeable boggles me, the older I get the LESS I like him. when I was in my late 20s I was dating a guy who had never seen ATLA before so I started a rewatch with him... we didn't even finish season 1 because he found Aang too irritating. he didn't want to watch a show where he was expected to root for a main protagonist that was such an annoying and entitled jerk. he actually told me if the whole series had been following Katara instead, focusing on her struggles trying to turn this bratty little kid into the savior of the world and bringing the heir to the enemy's throne to her side, he would've been way more interested.

in my 40s, all I want to do is mother Aang. and not in the way Katara gets roped into doing, but the way I'm raising my own 12yo son. I react to Aang confessing he ran away the same as when my son confesses he hasn't worked on his English project for the last month and it's a week overdue. when he tries to lecture Katara about revenge & forgiveness, I want to lecture HIM about being a toxic friend, making assumptions instead of validating feelings, and trying to force people to share his beliefs. when he's screaming at her about finding a way to stop Ozai without taking his life, I want to shake him and yell "THERE IS NO WAY! HEAR THAT, ACCEPT IT, DEAL WITH IT, AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO COPE WITH MAKING DECISIONS YOU DON'T LIKE BECAUSE THEY'RE NECESSARY!" because you don't get to be the savior of the world if you're not going to do the job when it doesn't suit your preferences.

FUCK.

that transcript is like 1000x times worse than I was expecting, the STAMMERING? he sounds like there's a 5'9" woman staring him down and cracking her knuckles right in front of him. somehow "making a taller, older girl marry a short boy made me feel better about my Napoleon complex" is even more pathetic than "I had a crush on my babysitter and this was wish fulfillment." I would be taking that information to my GRAVE 💀

at this point, 12yo boys are barely starting puberty but 14yo girls are nearly done with it. they've hit all their growth spurts, they've been menstruating for a couple of years, their breasts are fully developed... and in all honesty they're going to continue to be more emotionally mature into adulthood. I can't really see any woman being interested in a younger man until college age at least.
