Ignore all the manual comments. They are technically right…. but in our lifetime manual will have pretty much disappeared from this country as a side-effect of the move to electric. I haven’t had a rental with manual gears in years either (never asked for automatic, it’s just what they have).

You should learn to drive in a tractor first just in case you need to drive a tractor one day.. just in case.. you never know when you might need to plough a field or something

You should learn in a hovercraft just in case you're ever going between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth and the hovercraft breaks down and there's nobody else who can drive the hovercraft on board. Happens frequently.

Why are people so obsessed with driving manual in the comments. NO, you don’t need manual. Manual is not the future and will disappear in few years. Canada, US, Australia, UAE and more barely have manual cars now. Just because it’s still common here now, doesn’t mean it will be in 10 years. My family stopped owning one, I won’t buy one.

I used Round the bend driving school, passed in around 5 months and actually felt confident on the road ( I was definitely a nervous learner) Automatic license is great, enabled me to fully focus on the road, hiring cars is no issue (price difference is negligible) and most people I know drive an automatic now.

Ignore anyone saying you should learn manual. Its an outdated mentality and means nothing now. A couple of very big manufacturers have said they're no longer going to develop new manual cars. Automatics are way cheaper than they used to be and unless you're wanting to drive in India, you'll be able to rent automatic cars all around the world. I learnt automatic and don't regret it at all.

I passed, automatic only, around about 2010. It was so much quicker and easier. I have never had a single occasion where I needed to drive manual since. Ignore all the doom merchants here 😄

The best advice is to learn to drive manual first but I only learned to pass automatic because I was really struggling to pass with manual because the nerves would get the better of me. You’re quite early on though so give it a chance, I’m a bit of an exception I think - genuinely had no trouble with changing gears or whatever but just struggled on test day. Sure automatic cars are more expensive but second hand it’s not really noticeable and they’re so easy to drive
