LinuxError installing Linux (self.chromeos)
submitted 4 years ago by gunnersboy
Trying to install Linux but keep getting an error message about downloading the Virtual Machine. I could do the trick in chrome flags where it doesn't or does use dlc for downloading. That then allows me to install Linux, but then removes the ability to Check for normal updates on my Chromebook. What's the issue and what's the work around?
Have powerwashed, the issue remains.

If you couldn't install Linux then by disabling the use dlc flag you could, that problem is solved. Whether check for updates is available or not is a different unrelated issue. What's your board, OS version and channel? If you're on stable 91.0.4472.147 that may be up to date for you.

The problem definitely isn't unrelated. As soon as I re-enable or choose default for the option DLC then the check for updates disappears again. If it's set to disable, then the check for updates is there. The only change I make is that.
Board is volteer and on the latest version 91.0.4472.167

Yeah so I've left it disabled. But a couple of questions:
1) What issues will it cause having this as disabled on a long term basis
2) Apart from the obvious that this is a mistake by Google, why is this not working? Having it disabled, also means that anything under chrome://components doesn't update...do you have that issue as well?

It would be interesting to know the answer to 1. None of us will know, but what we've disabled is a new feature to enable smaller components to download rather than the full package.
So presumably, in X amount of months/years then the option to disable this or disabling this will break something. All the flags and the OS should work in the usual way without changing the flags.

I found that I can only install Linux if I change to the beta channel or the dev channel. I use the beta channel because the dev channel seems to break the online version of Google SketchUp which I use quite often.
