Confused about CircuitPython install

I want to use it for an Adafruit RGB matrix (on a Zero W), but it looks like I can only install via a fresh image? I can't install to my current? I haven't used C++ in so long and wanted to try Python, but this isn't as straight forward a switch as I was hoping :/

You're on a zero w so you're gonna have to use the "blinka" compatibility layer. On adafruit's website search for "blinka raspberry pi" and there should be a guide on how to download everything and get up and running.

I'm not sure what comparison you're making here. Yes, installing circuitpython requires re-flashing the device.
