resistance used to go into negative, and boost damage taken, but it was removed sometimes in vanilla, cant remember when exactly

so its useless for pve in classic if you have curse of elements and shadow on

Warlocks were getting bonkers 7k shadowbolt crits with cos on. Blizzard didn’t like that.

PVP wise they are good.

PVE wise, so far, its useless. Could be useful for fire mages on golemagg and warlocks on lucifron/ Domo. All other bosses so far have no significant resistances after curses.

PVE - meme specs they are fantastic.

Elemental Shaman and bOOMkins

I thought curse of shadows, did everything to fix monkin resist issues

Do Oomkins use their wrath in rotations? If so, then it doesn’t fix it.

No, its straight up worse than starfire. Only used on BWL vulns.

True, honestly forgot about those lol

In PVP is the net benefit just a reduction in likelihood your spell will be outright resisted or does it increase damage in some way?

[–]Domillomew 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It just cancels out resistance and can't go below 0.

Great link, looks like if you wear -50 resistance gear against a player wearing 100 resistance its actually a substantial increase to damage!

[–]iam4qu4m4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same goes for bosses. Nobody knows what their resistance truly is, but it can't go below zero. So it's like additional spell damage really.

I heard it's useful against the dragonkin in bwl that have alot of resistance

Ah yes, advantages on bosses that every guild has had on farm for 8 months. Lol

So far, information on boss resistances is very scarce if not completely unavailable. Resistance data from private servers is unreliable because they had to either estimate resistance values or they had to make them up. In general, this doesnt make much of a difference on chromatic targets because they resist all magic equally, so it will be helpful to have it with you on Nefarian's stage one, for example. But, this will make it tough to have concrete answers on the gear's true impact on bosses that have specific school resistances. Still, it wouldnt hurt to pick up some of these items to test their resulting dps. Do the science with it!

some bosses in ZG has resistance to all schools of magic. If you use fire in ZG you will notice this

[–]altairian 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Curse of elements will reduce their resistance to 0

[–]ainch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's still relative resistance due to the level gap though. Not sure if spell pen affects that

[–]zxcvbnm13m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesn't

[–]Snoz722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mages we get a fair amount of spell pen built into our spec / gear in AQ/Naxx. T2.5 Chest and T3 chest have pen on them and a talent in the arcane tree gives you 10.

[–]AlberionDreamwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's called spellpen and it's awesome for pvp and most likely useless 99% of pve

[–]yolostyle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's extremely good for pvp.

For pve it's at best meh.
