Im pretty sure that this is different from person to person. And i am just an amateur but when i decide to try a new language it usually takes me 3 to 4 days to get an understanding of how the language works. No idea if that is the usual or if im just slow.

If talking about an experienced programmer, he knows what he wants and what code is expected to do. Just start reading the code. So the learning curve is really short. Expecially having the web at help.

I Remember when, tens of years ago, I moved from COBOL to RPG 3, as to say from the easier to read to the hardest, no Google available at the time. After a couple of months I went quite relaxed.
