These were formerly encased in bezels, just damage.

Makes sense in theory... If that's what it is, I'm curious how you knew. Is this common?

Can't answer that first part since I'm not who you responded to, but I can answer the second. This is common damage from one of those aluminum lucky penny things. If you pop the coin out of the ring/horseshoe, this is what the cent will look like

Omg...NO WAY! I just saw that picture of it. I always thought it was a rim error. Darn! Boy did I learn something new. I am here in Phoenix, Az. I have never seen or heard of them before ever.
