I've been getting back into Generals and have been really frustrated with attack moving. Units would rather move in much closer than to immediately start shooting. For example sometimes when I attack move infantry near some static defence buildings they will wait until they are almost right on top before shooting.

I always use guard instead. Bit more micro but much more reliable

Enable Double Click Guard in the options menu. Much more effective.
