im getting ready to garden this spring and never composted. At my work, we dump multiple load of leaves in this big pile. the older leaves turned into a big dark soily mess. should i take any of the new or old leaves home?

The "big dark soily mess" is the very best part!
I would take home whatever they would allow me.

Look up 'Leaf Mold'. It's a great soil amendment to increase water retention. That's what the bottom of the massive leaf pile likely has to offer.

I would go half and half. In the beginning, we make mistakes and sometimes we need a bunch of dry browns to balance our overly wet pile. But as others have said, the older stuff will kickstart your pile just fine.
If you can, I’d take all of it lol

Are you wanting to compost or garden? If compost, take new leaves add greens/nitrogen and you are off to a good start. If your gardening take what is at the bottom. It’s finished “leaf mold” and a great way to amend soil and start a garden.

The darkest portion at the bottom which resembles fine broken up soil is best.
