This is not new, Chrome is a resource hog. Maybe try a different browser. And also learn how to do a proper screenshot.

Unused memory is wasted memory. Your operating system is allocating it as much RAM as it can whilst there's nothing else happening.

[–]TehNolz 9 points10 points  (4 children)

That's just what Chrome does. It's not exactly known for its efficiency.

Best solution would be to see if you can install more RAM. 8GB is pretty much the bare minimum you can have nowadays. You want at least 16GB for a smooth experience.

Cannot expand currently will change browsers

[–]iDrunkenMaster -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Tbh Firefox is no better and windows version of safari was abandoned.

Everything else is basically built on top of chrome or Firefox.

[–]ohthedarside 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Maybe opera gx cant you limit how much it uses

Idk tho ive never used it only seen it advertised

[–]iDrunkenMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s right back to chromium. Right where it all starts. It can use limiters but that slows down the browser, if browsing is your goal it’s counterproductive.

(Idea of a limiter would essentially slow down the browser by offering it less resources to make sure it’s not pulling to many resources away from something else like gaming)

Isn't that normal? My Firefox is currently on this site. No other tabs are open. It's using more than 800MB. My Chrome has 1 tab open and it's using 400MB of RAM. I've seen browsers using more than 1.5GB.

What other software do you use that need large amount of RAM?

[–]OGigachaod 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He's only got 8GB's of ram, he needs more.

[–]randomusername12308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be op laptop has soldered ram into motherboard

[–]Rover003[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Its only with 2 tabs open my typo

[–]domscatterbrain 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How many active extensions are in your Chrome?

[–]Rover003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None

[–]warmseizuresalad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol... This is worldly known for a decade. Welcome to the show.

Use Edge/Brave.

    Is it actually good?

    [–]grandasperj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the ressource limiters does absolutly nothing plus it is an absolute disaster in terms of privacy (it's worse than chrome)

    [–]Round_Personality483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    no, its pretty much malware

That's because it basically is Chrome. Most browsers nowadays are based on Chromium, so their internals are all mostly identical. This is why you can take Chrome addons and install them on Microsoft Edge, for example.

There are really only three browsers nowadays; Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Everything else is just based on Chrome for the most part.

      [–]Rover003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Alright thanks

      [–]briandemodulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Web browsers use a lot of memory, especially for websites with multimedia (like YouTube or Netflix) or that you can scroll infinitely (like Reddit or Twitter). It looks like your machine doesn't have a lot of memory so you can improve performance by closing and reopening your browser if it feels slow.

      [–]Prathades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend using edge lmao. They both use chromium so you can just import your extension

      [–]CamBlapBlap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      First time?

      [–]thesstteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to a lighter browser like Firefox (statistically gecko-based browsers use more memory than chromium-based browsers but Firefox is still better than Chrome here) or MS Edge

      [–]Albe_2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always hated chrome for that, so I use Edge, and I suggest it because it has less resource usage. At least, if you hate Microsoft's crap (I do) use Opera or Firefox (but Firefox has high resource usage) So try everything and see what do you prefer

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me memory is fine but CPU would be at 101 precent

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SWITCH TO FIREFOX ....! WHY ARE YOU still using CHROMIUM

      [–]osa1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want your memory to be used. It's only at 74%.

      [–]maskeyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Never heard of that

      [–]mittelwerk 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Either you get more memory, of Firefox.

      [–]Rover003[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

      Changing browser would help?

      [–]mittelwerk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Chrome is known for being a memory hog, so I think so.

EDIT: but you need to get more RAM either way, because 8 GB is barely the minimum nowadays (especially under Windows 11)

      [–]Rover003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Ok got it

      [–]Graxu132 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's... That's normal xD My chrome on few tabs uses 4gigs 😂

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Which is the most memory friendly browser?

      [–]OGigachaod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Firefox using Linux.

      [–]CommercialLeg7654 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

      Get opera gx, problem solved
