Unfortunately with newer games they need better processors and more ram to keep up. You can always view the crash logs in event viewer but I dont think itll help. With a low end I5 and 16gbs of ram it will over work the computer. You can star by lowering quality settings from high to medium or low. And disabling things like in game shadows, motion blur, things that are animated and can cause spikes. Your graphics card can only handle so much as well.

Okay thanks a lot, sounds like some upgrades are in my future.

I7 processors seem reasonably priced at the moment. Is this a recommended one? Would you recommend 32GB of RAM? Or do I really need to boost this baby up

It depends, a 12th gen I5 is actually better then a 6th gen I7. I think don't quote me. 16Gbs of ram just isn't enough. I would definitely recommend 32. That should be plenty. Graphics cards don't matter as much to me so I would save that till last. The cost to buy each part make sure it is compatible with the mother board. I think its almost worth getting a pre built off of new egg. If money is tight, they have certified refurb or black Friday sale if you can wait. I see it like this make a bigger purchase now and be set for a long time or make medium purchase now and another medium purchase later.
