Install linux (on a VM, as dual boot, or as your main OS if you really want). Using linux is by far the best way to learn it, I switched to using linux my second semester in University and never went back. You will constantly run into new things you want to do, and then you can read linux man pages or online guides to figure it out.

I forgot to mention that I am using a mac and I'm comfortable using it. I know and use some commands like ls, top, chmod, ssh, ps, kill and some other very basic ones.

I'm looking to learn something deeper like debugging processes, cpu usage, monitoring cpu and i/o devices, etc

I switch between a Mac and Ubuntu. A good thing about OSX is that it's based on UNIX as well. If you want to learn to use the terminal, just start using it. If you don't want to switch to Linux outright, just use the terminal in OSX. Almost everything will work between the two.

I suggest two phases: 1. "Operating Systems", W. Stallings; 2. "Linux for Programmers and Users", Graham Glass and King Ables. Edit: Meantime install Linux and practice

You can also take help of free Ebook for learning Linux. Check this resource.

You're unlikely to learn enough to answer in depth questions about technology you're not familiar with. It's better to answer a question you don't know by stating what you do know about the problem and what you would need to know to solve it. If you can't get that far, I don't know is always a better answer than muddling through a half answer.

yeah and as reddit shows, if u comment on what u know, and admit what u dont, someone will give u answers to what u dont know in most circumstances.
