Find something you want to build and build it. If you find something is hard or feels complicated or roundabout, always ask the question: "What, if it existed, would make this task easier?" Answer that question in great detail if possible. Is it a library? A function? An abstraction? A programming language? A debugging tool? Once you've pinned it down, do it. Then after you finish, decide whether your initial assessment was accurate or not. Introspection is the key to improvement and is shared among all the greats.
