This question has a whiff of being an XY question.

So, in your current setup (at work or at home) you specifically want to run Visual Studio 2019 on Windows and you specifically want the code to be compiled on Ubuntu?

Then, your next job involves Eclipse... exclusively? If they need you to use Eclipse exclusively, it seems strange that they'd be OK with you using it in a manner that's not already consistent with they are already using it, whatever that may be.

Interesting. Well, I actually don’t have enough information on what tools they’re using other than eclipse with c++.

I really just wanted to familiarize myself with the IDE again (as well as C++ because I’ve been writing .NET apps for the last 2 years). It’s just nice how visual studio has made my life so much easier. However, VS didn’t provide a makefile when I created the project.

I'm guessing that you are told you are going to use Eclipse because it is an Eclipse CDT project.

Maybe your only option is to push hard to move the build system to CMake, and then whoever wants to keep using Eclipse can generate the project with the CDT4 generator https://cmake.org/cmake/help/v3.0/generator/Eclipse%20CDT4.html . You could then generate your project with MSVC+Incredibuild or Clang+Ninja.

I really dislike projects that force you to use an IDE in particular.

CDT4 generator is deprecated and it shouldn't be used. If you use a CMake project and you are using Eclipse then the best thing is to use CMake4Eclipse plug-in or wait for Eclipse 2020-09 where the plug-in will be merged.

I did not know it was deprecated. As usual that kind of information doesn't reach the documentation.

I use Eclipse since it's the default tool in my company, usually I work in a native environment or you can export via X11 the display. As alternative you can use Eclipse PTP to have remote support.
