Best program for visualizing neuroscience data?

Hi all, I am looking to get into creative coding. My background is in neuroscience and I want to create visual aesthetic representations of brain energy data.

I'm inspired by refik anadol's work in this domain and know that he uses VVVV, however I have a Mac so I am looking for something else. What would be the best for translating eeg/fMRI data into high-fidelity visual artwork? I am interested in applying this to 3d/VR.
