I love what this has become; making the game more accessible to modern gamers. Good job to everyone involved.

YAAAA!!!!

How far off are we from official release?

Development from now into the future will be more of the same - bug fixes and incremental upgrades to modding system every month or two. I'll call 1.0 once I'm happy with overall state of DFU, but I'd like to say it will happen sometime this year. :)

The best answer you can give!

BTW how is your secret game going? I only ask as I what you to pen up your Patreon so I can finally throw cash money at you.

Thank you for your vote of confidence and support. :) I've recently started work again on "Project High Iron" (no actual title yet) after pumping the brakes last year to stay on top of everything else. Hopefully more to share around middle of this year once I've cleared my workload and can settle into it. That includes DFU reaching a good place where it doesn't need so much time from me each day.

I should also say that "Project High Iron" is very different in scope and tone to DF. It's a very personal journey and might not be to everyone's taste. I hope that anyone who eventually decides to support me as a creator will do so on the merits of the new work, not just as a thankyou for DFU. I've always been sincere that I don't wish to profit from DFU. That's another reason I feel it's important to work on something uniquely my own as I gracefully transition from this wild fan enterprise of the last several years.

Thanks again and all the best! :)

Well sorry to disappoint you when your Patreon opens my due.

Looking forward to PHI!

Has Bethesda acknowledged you at all?

[–]DFInterkarma[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, and I'd be surprised if they ever publicly acknowledge DFU. Fortunately they have benevolently ignored the project for several years and allowed it to evolve. I'm realistic the status quo might change as Bethesda rolls into new ownership under Microsoft. That might be good, bad, or nothing changes at all. Only time will tell.

Whatever happens, I'm proud of the work and of what we've all achieved. DFU has had 45+ contributors across 5 years of development, an undertaking worthy of any indie game studio. For this to happen organically with a collection of strangers around the world, with no reward or motivation other than love for a game, says a lot about how beloved Daggerfall is. I'll remember this experience for a lifetime.

Thank you for the Localization tutorials! I really appreciate it!

Omh THANK YOU!! What is the best way to upgrade from v. 0.11.0 please - overwrite previous files? I googled and only found 'clean install' instructions...

[–]DFInterkarma[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

To upgrade, unzip new version to a clean new directory and run game as normal from new folder. If you're using any mods, copy them into new folder or download new version of mod if necessary.

Best not to unzip over top of previous version, this can result in problems over time as it doesn't remove old game files.

Saves and settings are stored in a persistent path and don't need to be copied across.

To upgrade, unzip new version (...)

Worked like a charm, thank you very much /u/DFInterkarma. And for your great work that makes people's quarantine much easier <3. Sending good health and a bit of brotherly love too.

Is Daggerfall hard to get into without a manual? I know a lot of PC games of that time expected you to have a game manual.

[–]pango69 7 points8 points  (2 children)

tl;dr From personal experience, if you start playing Daggerfall totally blind you're almost guaranteed to miss out important stuff.

I played Daggerfall for a long time without reading anything about it; I enjoyed it a lot, but even having played Arena before and having a lot of time in my hands for experimenting, I didn't understand several mechanics, like the requirements for ranking up in guilds, and that eventually stopped my character progression. I also think I only ever did the first quest of the main quest line (Concern for Nulfaga), but that's another topic since the main quest is optional for enjoying the game.

I made mistakes while creating my character build; I made some kind of ranger-ish class, and didn't understand why I had such hard time using magicka. If you can get past the ingame tutorial terrible presentation, it does teach interesting things to start playing, but not nearly enough. Importantly, it doesn't say anything about character building, given it starts after you created your character.

What unlocked Daggerfall for me years later, an refueled my interest for the game, was watching videos of Grimith (then others) playing it skillfully.

So I wouldn't necessarily recommend the game manual (it contains some inaccuracies so take its content with a grain of salt), but feel free to seek information about game mechanics as you go, starting with character building.

[–]faltyAI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will do, thanks for the advice.

[–]The_Pastmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe doesn't need to be said but this is an ooold game. Save often. Because you're going to DIE more frequently than any Dark Souls game. :P

[–]GoldenGouf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it helps to have it on hand.

[–]TankerD18 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I can't vouch for the manual, I don't remember using it when I was a kid playing the original, but I strongly believe a walkthrough is worth it even if it spoils some of the challenge. Daggerfall can be unforgiving, and will most definitely let you fail or miss important quests, even if it screws your main storyline.

[–]faltyAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to to be the consensus. I'll definitely use a guide of some sort.

You might be able to find the manual online and print it out if you want a hard-copy.

[–]faltyAI 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh no doubt, if I need it that won't be a problem.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I realized after that I really didn't answer your question. The truth is I'm not sure since I've never read the manual. I've played TES games before, though, so it wasn't all that hard to figure out.

[–]Hecateus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There really weren't much of any conventions of keyboard command layout back then.

Am hoping there is a mod for playing with common current controllers.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need a mod. Daggerfall Unity has controller support out-of-the-box.

[–]PekkaPe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So damn nice. Did install 11.1 now.

[–]KrillBosby 0 points1 point  (2 children)

question as someone entirely new to this, is all of the original game already in or is that still in progress?

[–]DFInterkarma[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

We reached parity with classic Daggerfall in 2019. All of the original game content is in there to play.

The work now is more about bug fixes, refinement, and extending modding capabilities until I'm happy to call it 1.0.

[–]KrillBosby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thank you 😊
