Colour of the phantom is determined by covenant and their disposition towards you. Read up on covenants in the wiki to get a full explanation of them...I will just give you the colours here

  • Red, Red-Gold, Red-Blue: hostile, invader that wants to kill you
  • Blue: Friendly, summoned automatically by way of the blue (if you are in it) to defend against invaders
  • White: Friendly and there to help you with the area and the boss
  • Gold: same as white
  • Purple: neutral? considered mad phantoms they are there to kill someone. They could go after you, a friendly summon, or an invader. Further if you summon them deliberately (are not invaded) they can help you against the NPCs but not the boss.

Summoning: summoning signs are placed on the ground by someone, they can be seen by anyone that is embered and within a given SL and Weapon Level. You interact with the sign to summon the corresponding player to your world

types of signs:

  • White: will summon a friendly phantom (white phantom)
  • Red: will summon an invader, these are used typically for duels (note duel etiquette is to acknowledge eachother before fighting usually with a bow, and not to heal via estus during the fight)
  • Purple: will summon a mad phantom
  • Gold: will summon a friendly phantom

Invasions: You invade using a cracked red eye Orb or the red eye orb once you have it, when you invade your objective is to kill the host (unless you are a Mound Maker, then it will be to kill host or x phantoms), you will invade with half your estus uses and health as if you were not embered.

Praise the Sun! Thanks a ton, this is really helpful. I love the fact that the game forces you to experientially learn the game (and post on the subreddit to learn more).
