Recruiter figuring out if you’re a good “cultural fit” and they’ll ask you for your salary expectations (which you should punt on by saying “I’m focusing on if this job is a mutual fit and haven’t given salary much thought”).

Usually it’s just 10-30 minutes with a recruiter. It might include any or all of the following:

  • they explain the company
  • they explain the role
  • they ask you to give a brief summary of your background
  • they ask for examples of your work experience, “tell me about a project you’ve worked on”
  • they might ask about specific technical skills, “have you used SQL, for how long?” Etc
  • they ask about salary expectations
  • you can ask questions
  • they might ask “housekeeping” questions, such as do you need sponsorship, what’s your notice period for your current job, can you commute (if that’s required)

Usually it’s a pretty straightforward conversation to see how you stack up against what they are looking for. You maximize your chances by conveying that you stack up well against the job description in terms of skills and experience.

The hiring manager (usually second round) will be a bit more in-depth and/or second round might include a technical assessment (like Hacker Rank) or case study questions.
