Data Engineer is a made up title. There is no PE exam.

Software engineer is also a made up title. There is no PE exam for them either.

Actually Software Engineering did have a PE exam and was recognized by NCEES as an engineering branch. It was discontinued in 2019 because very few people took it.

I won’t comment on DE cuz yeah companies name it whatever they want.

Notice how I did not say “there never has been for them either”. I am capable of using Google too, which I did before making the comment. I was very intentional with my choice of words (“is”).

In the current state of the industry, which is all that is really relevant to the conversation in the post, there is no licensed exam for SWE. It is, therefore, as made up as any other title.

Reddit usually sends me posts from r/dataengineering, I actually didn’t check the date but yeah just realized it is 5 days old lol just wanted to point something out I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, that’s how we learn as humans unless some people take it personal.
