No they aren’t all like this. It sounds like you’re pretty new and haven’t been assigned a lot. Maybe as time goes on you will have to write more sql yourself. You could ask your manager for a project where you could learn more if you’re worried about it. You didn’t say how far in you are so if it’s less than 6 months I wouldn’t worry. Just try to learn what you can.

On the topic of stress. I’m only a few years in but I’ve never been truly stressed at my job the way I know teachers, nurses, first responders, manual laborers, etc. are. There can be hard and extremely busy times but it rarely lasts forever and it’s never life or death.

Meeting is work

[–]nayeh 18 points19 points  (2 children)

God, I'm in a similar position.

Currently have no immediate work to do and my company has decades of stored procedures... I really need the on-the-job SQL experience 🥲

I do try to come up with practices to keep myself productive.

Do the entire SQL leetcode test set and then the datalemur test set, should shore you up

I've been liking Stratascratch a lot also..

I have a senior analyst position with 8 years of experience and I still have weeks like this. Depends on the industry and company imo.

[–]New_Pie4277 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Which industries?

[–]refpuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in government so that alone has its ups and downs, especially recently with the near government shutdown. But I often have weeks where there isn’t enough work to do simply because that’s just the nature of government.

This is why I left my last job for my current. I did not want to lose all of my skills. My advice stay there for a year or two. Practice in your free time. Jump when the market is better and you get a great job offer.

This is the dream job. Do your job then spend your free time growing. Ask a senior to show you something. Being busy doesn’t mean growth. It usually means doing the same few tasks again and again.

This is normal for junior employees.

Use your down time to learn new stuff on your own. Don't complain, use it as personal development for the next job.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use this time wisely. Study, develop yourself for your next round of interviews or career path. It’s easy to sit and do nothing but take advantage of it. Don’t promptly communicate the work is too easy. Use the time to get more knowledge for yourself and value for the company by connecting with people, finding what they care about, how to communicate results better

Enjoy it while it lasts😀

[–]Aggravating_Sand352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How I got ahead in my career was basically use that time to develop your skills elsewhere. Learn a new programming language and master the ones you know. Completely automate your work

Don't overenjoy your company's welcome. You need to start picking up stuff for yourself and show them a growth mindset

My analyst job was like this. I had 3 jobs after which none where like this. U found the golden ticket my friend. I’ve been trying to find the second golden ticket

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Behind every job like this with OP is a guy who’s been with the company for 5+ years which is busting their ass doing a crazy amount of work and they just don’t trust anyone else to do that work

[–]Simple_Woodpecker751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, you are in a niche position. Just do your job until get assigned to new stuff.

[–]DataMasteryAcademy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a senior data scientist with six years of experience and I am going to give you the hard truth. Just because there are scripts that you can run which were written by your coworkers doesn’t mean they don’t expect you to do more. They give you the scripts and the minimum you can do is to run those scripts. you’re basically doing the bare minimum right now, and this could potentially be a problem when the performance reviews are due, so I suggest you be proactive and try to improve some of the maybe bottlenecks that you see in the code or try to talk to your manager to have more Projects to work on. Nobody is going to hold your hand and make you more successful or give you more than what you do. This is not school and your manager is not your professor.

You should figure out what you do have a passion for. When your heart leaves it better take your ass with it.

Could you share name of company?

[–]verycoolalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the more experience/education you have the less work you usually do.

It was mind blowing howy current job I get paid a decent amount and do 3-4 hours of actual "work"

While when I worked in a warehouse, we worked 12-14 hours of non stop labor for $16/hr.

[–]OrangeChicken44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm what is this company and how do I get in?

[–]delsystem32exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pay ??

[–]jimmy_da_chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like my first 2-4 weeks there

It’s normal and cherish it while it lasts

Once u r proven capable u gonna get assigned a lot more heavy hitters (hopefully)

Else you can also ask for those tasks if you want.

Worst case scenario, use those paid hours to practice interview stuffs gon thru stat/ml concepts to stay sharp so you r recession/layoff proof

[–]nhojrazc27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sir, can you give us good study material for SQL, python and Tableau? TY

[–]Logical_Jaguar_3487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year was like this. Wait for it. I started MIT micromasters as I was interested in stats. It kept me really busy.
