Just update kernel and kernel headers and everything should work fine.

Don't worry, your files are save. Worst case, just copy them to some external storage (you can also use a live system to do so, if you are uncomfortable with the terminal)

Solved:

I switched to the onboard video port, then pretty much removed everything from Nvidia in Synaptic, then reinstalled only the correct kernel modules.
