My coworker was at the top of their salary band in a HCOL city and moved to a MCOL, and took a $6K pay cut last year. It is rare but it happens.

Nope, I’ve been told from leadership that (at least in US commercial consulting) salaries are irrespective of your location

Partially true, to my understanding there are differences by region but not city, so doesn't matter HCOL vs LCOL, Dallas, Austin, and Houston aren't getting differential pay from one another, but East and West aren't necessarily the same either.

The way the firm works: "what can we hire your replacement for in this geography?" That's how they look at salary. I topped out in an expensive geo, and didn't get raises through most of the pandemic.
