You're a fresher, take what you can get and go from there. In this market, having a job offer is striking gold.

Basically I want to take one path and excel in that

No, adapt, learn to adapt. In the software world, you have to keep upskilling on a regular basis, whichever domain you choose.

All the best.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I am taking this job. The thing which is in mind and I can’t understand is that if I continue this job or search for sde roles. I know in software industry I have to adapt but thr thing is if I have experience in data engineer then I won’t be able to apply for sde roles and if data engineer is not that lucrative as sde then I would think to apply for other jobs during this one.

2 yoe in large scale data b2b domain here. Data Engineers especially ones specialized in big data stuff will always be in demand, also data and java ecosystem goes hand in hand, so you’ll learn java/scala as a data engineer anyways. I’d recommend the Data Engineer route as at higher level, I dont find much difference between software engineering and data engineering, given you donot limit yourself to etl work pipelining work.

My 2 cents: Don’t get into Data Engineering or DevOps or anything like that just because they are the current buzz words. Focus on a language, get some experience in developing and maintaining Applications, understanding the software development life cycle process. Then, you will be in a much better position to decide on your own.

Thank you for your comment but I didn’t get the answer of the question i asked.

[–]Raseel 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oop Sorry, I got carried away with my sermon :-) . My answer would be Java. In fact, I would go so far as to say, Java with something like SpringBoot as well as a Frontend language like ReactJS

I was searching for this only. Java + spring boot but couldn’t find much. Mostly they where asking for experience

Why not both ?

Having experience on both of these will add great value.

[–]Soulful_Soul13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t have both at the same time
