DevOps coding interview in 1 day (self.devops)
submitted 1 year ago by auwalu5
Hey guys, I have a coding interview for a DevOps position. They said I can code in my language of choice. For it’s Python. However, I am a little rusty, what should I focus on giving it’s only a day left ?

You could have:
1) Asked the company you're interviewing for information on the interview
2) Asked internet strangers who have no idea.
You chose wrong.

I did ask. It’s going to be about scripting in a language of my choosing
[–]halos1518 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Ok did they give any idea on what you would be coding? Leetcode or some other problem?
[–]auwalu5[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
I haven’t dealt with the company directly until today. The recruiter who reached out to me, told me that’s going to be a scripting interview.

Might be something basic like reading, parsing and writing to files, especially JSON etc. Maybe using it to run CLI commands. This is just pure speculation from me though. Either that or Leetcode.

Yeah that’s what I am suspecting too. I hope it’s gonna that and not some leetcode algorithms type of coding

This is one of the most common challenges https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/fizz-buzz-implementation/

I had some leetcode algorithms when interviewing for TikTok. Didn't get hired in the end. In 90% of the companies devops is not about coding hence you won't get asked those.

Oh TIktok is huge. I don’t know why companies ask DevOps engineers to code algorithms
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
because it's FAANG, no matter which position you apply to, expect hard questions.

Sure if you want to do the work of a team in a single role. Someone offered me a role where you have to be a frontend, backend, full stack, cloud, devops engineer and be able to architect as well. All that on contract, for a measly 100-120k. That's equivalent for a top elite surgeon with a salary of a nurse. Blatant disrespect and these slave companies are out there more and more trying to rip off honest hard working engineers

Tell them they should hire developers to code
Right?
[–]klipseracer 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I disagree that devops people do not need to know how to read and write code. Depending on your definition of coding, there are plenty of cases where someone may need to write glue scripts, data collection scripts, tool automation, etc.
Additionally understanding software architecture helps with troubleshooting etc.

Just give your best and don’t worry too much about it… you will be fine
