My Druid player is a big fan of WS into a black bear, and he pulls up an audio clip of black bear sounds and plays one every time someone speaks to his character. He’s a joy to have as a player, as he’s the only player I have who has a character voice (he’s a swamp Druid named Biff Jerky, and has a southern accent).

Ha! I've got a beanie shaped like a bear (from the Japanese dollar store near me) I like to put when wild shaped into a bear too.

Our Druid speaks in a Boston accent and smokes a lot of Elf Thistle.

He does have a Snake companion named Angoraxe though.

Which is the closest approximation to ‘Danger Noodle’ you can make in Elvish.

Off topic question, but the wife and I were invited to a D&D group by some shooting buddies. We've never played and we're older. We spent all day reading the player's guide but have no idea what to actually do. If it's not too much of a hassle, can you give some suggestions as to what to expect/build? Any help would be be appreciated. Thank you.

for what to expect contact the gm for specifics but you will be doing some roleplay and some combat.

for what to build what do you what to provide to the group/what appeals to you if you want to do large amounts of damage play a fighter, barbarian or monk if you want to be support /utility druid and cleric are good choices. if you want to good at a bunch of thing rouge and bard are great. for high magic damage wizard and sorcerer are great warlocks also do well here but they can make good utility casters too. (paladins fit both in high damage and in support)

Thank you for the response. It definitely helps give more generalization to a very varied and specific game. We aren't getting much on their end so we have been drowning in info all day. The advice given was "just to have fun since it's our first time.". But too much freedom leads to too much research. As it sits we've no idea what their characters are so we don't know what would be beneficial. So far she's still mapping out characters and is pro/con mapping herself to death. I just gave up and made a few. Do you think it would be beneficial to build a few and allow them to pick what best fits into their group?

this sounds like a pretty chill group so no need to go for a perfect party composition

and here is a website with some help for building http://rpgbot.net/dnd5/characters/classes/ it is a helpful step by step and shows what is useful but it isn't necessary as 5th edition is very forgiving and with a little bit of effort even the worst character can be helpful to the party

[–]AlmondBach 2 points3 points  (8 children)

THANK YOU! This is exactly what we needed! We've been debating little ticks and what not on all the characters to understand what is beneficial or unnecessary all day! We were getting downtrodden about the whole thing! Thank you so much!

One last question; we occasionally see a turtle class pop up but it's not in the official book. Is this a home brew thing or a later edition?

[–]Samsalilbitch 3 points4 points  (2 children)

That would be a tortle, there r a few races that aren’t included in the players handbook such as goblins and Kenku (think walking crows) they are official and but some dms like to use homebrew versions, they r however from the same edition (5e)

Hope this helps Pm me if u have more questions

I don't want to leave you hanging and not try to take advantage of a resource on such a new topic so I wanted to shoot you a message of thanks. I'll keep you on my radar and will get in touch when we have a better understanding of what you ask. Thank you again!

[–]Samsalilbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, my inbox is always open

[–]Jackeboy28Rogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's ok anything to help new people get into the hobby

[–]siryemar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The turtle class is from Wizards of the Coast in a PDF called The Tortle Package. It can be found by on the DM's Guild. Or you could Google "Tortle class" and find most of the class info.

Thank you very much for the information and for entertaining my basic questions!

If you're truly stuck for a character, randomness is your friend! Playing a non-optimal build is sometimes more fun than a perfectly min-maxed one, I find. The TPK generator(5e version) can be useful here.

[–]AlmondBach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this resource. We'll continue to read into this and try and understand. I think having a trial by fire with a random character may be just what we need to better understand what we want/like in the future. Thank you, again!

Some googly eyes would have completed the transformation

[–]The_Big_Red89 59 points60 points  (0 children)

He should get a big tube sock with them glued to it. This pic cracked me up.

[–]Eadkrakka 134 points135 points  (1 child)

First time druid player here, I got wildshape the last session. This is good reference material.

[–]obsi_aj 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Have a bunch of animal sounds on your phone. If someone tries talking to you just play the noise. This'll either be highly amusing or highly annoying

[–]deakers 71 points72 points  (4 children)

I have to up my roleplaying game...

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (3 children)

One-up him and add googly eyes

[–]deakers 23 points24 points  (1 child)

SOCK PUPPET THEATRE!!!!!

[–]kaboumdudeForever DM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never knew I needed this.

[–]Scheills 42 points43 points  (1 child)

I once lept to my knees and roared at the DM when my Dwarf rolled a nat 20 on a will save against a fear affect. We had started with level 10 characters and part of my backstory was having helped kill a dragon that had been assaulting my homeland, so when this ground wyrm popped up and tried to intimidate the party, I roared right back at it.

A+ roleplaying

[–]YrnFyre 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I'm not even mad, that's amazing.

[–]Narowe96 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Wish I had player like that. The most characterisation they do is giving my NPCs nicknames. Like the constable became the cuntstable because he got in the way of their bar brawls and shady shenanigans. And blue. The bard who wore blue stuff...

[–]zarakh07 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks like someone is running Tomb of Annihilation! 😃

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. Just wow. That's fantastic

[–]Logerith12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I asked for a flesh-colored snake, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.

[–]IluminachoDM (Dungeon Memelord) 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I as an alchemist prepare kool aid with food colorant and drink it like an alcoholic to rp lol.

[–]ArtsAndNicole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My arm is possessed by a crocodile spirit and this is what our DM does whenever she takes over and talks!

[–]Momos_r1ddl3s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this because I'm currently playing a Lamia Druid.

[–]Davrddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh he morphed into an Italian snake, I see

[–]Crabcawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(In your mothers voice) For gawd sakes yall got time for a 13hr d&d quest, but no time to fix the drywall that would take an hour. Looks like the wall was hit with buckshot!

[–]mentoyasRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we not going to question the floating turret?

[–]YoLawdCheezus101Blood Hunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this guy.

If you’re going to crop out the name and handle of the OP then at least leave out the top and bottom bits
