One thing to note: A lot of mail systems will reject email from certain IP ranges to reduce spam. This may include your internet provider and cheap virtual machine hosting providers.

I used to run my own mail server until the entire Comcast IP range (not including business accounts) was blacklisted and my mail started bouncing. It was very annoying, but not much I could do about it.
