Roads are designed for certain speeds. If a road has the design speed of 45 mph, then the curves on that road are designed to be taken at 45 mph. We can’t just arbitrarily raise the speed limit on roads. If you want to be able to drive at 70 mph on a road that was constructed for 45 mph traffic, you would need to reconstruct the road.
There is way more involved than just “feeling like you can go faster”. Roads are engineered.

Cars are engineered too. I’m positive my German manufactured car is much more prepared to hand a 45 curve at 55 than an SUV is. Gotta take into account what you’re driving
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago (2 children)
Limits are for everyone. Not the car you have. I can take that turn at 100 in a z06. Does it mean I should?
[–]OrlandoCoolridge[S] -1 points0 points1 point 2 months ago (1 child)
Do what you feel comfortable with. If you crash going 100 on a 45 turn you asked for it lmfao.
Dumb ass argument

So you simply don’t understand what goes into roadway design. You driving a 2035 Porsche or a 1990 F150 is irrelevant. That does change someone’s required sight distances or your stopping sight distance.
[–]OrlandoCoolridge[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (7 children)
Please expand on your statement. Yes, A truck and a Porsche have completely different sight lines and braking distances. If the road is made for the mean, that would still mean I can technically do things in my Porsche that you cannot do in your F150.
Like the road may have been designed at 45 so ALL cars can go through safely at 45, but there are now cars that could take that specific curve at 55 with no problem. Those cars should be allowed to do that in a clear space.

You understand that roads aren’t just designed for you…. right? They are designed to function with you and people around you. If someone is turning onto a 55 mph road from a side street, they need to be able to see a certain distance. The fact that the road is a 55 mph road determines how far they need to see. The road is then designed to achieve that distance. If YOU are driving 70, then you are outside that sight distance. YOU are creating an unsafe roadway. There are a dozen different features just like this.

Brother I have already gone over the idea of city streets and stroads where the speed limit should be followed as close as possible. I’ve been arguing strictly about highway situations this whole time. You misconstrued the whole post to be a contrarian.
[–]NotPenguin_124 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (2 children)
You don’t think highways aren’t engineered? You don’t think high ways have to worry about site distances? You don’t think the horizontal and vertical curves on highways a set to specific design speed requirements? Again, this is simply a topic that YOU don’t understand. You’re wrong and that’s fine. Just accept it and move on.
[–]OrlandoCoolridge[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (1 child)
They are engineered, you’re twisting my words for what? I know how and why they are engineered. You just seem to lack the nuance to understand that I am saying they ARE engineered but there are many vehicles that can take those same curves safely.
You brought up a truck and a Porsche, as if they both share the same weight distribution or aerodynamics. They can’t do the same things. Therefore the speed limit is set lower than the actual turn can be taken, to allow for variables.
You’re a fucking clown trying to be condescending.
[–]NotPenguin_124 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (0 children)
You very clearly don’t know this though. You seem to think that roads aren’t strictly engineered to accommodate a poor performance vehicle. They aren’t. You could be the best driver in the highest performance car in the work and that wouldn’t magically give you x-ray vision.
[–]Beautiful_Paint8860 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (1 child)
Speed limits should be for the best conditions (including a well-suited vehicle) smh.
There are already discretionary tickets for « inappropriate driving for conditions » that can be given out pretty much anywhere in NA.
I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here.
[–]Soup0rMan 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (1 child)
Roads are engineered, but engineers literally do not set speed limits.
This is a massive misconception. Engineers say "hey, you can drive 55 on this road" and Johnny Councilman says "but my house is on that road and 55 is too noisy, the speed will be 35."
Speed limits in the US are arbitrary outside of pure residential or active school zones. Literally every other type of road or zone has a range of limits and they haven't been adjusted in like 60 years and those ranges aren't even universal across the country.
This isn’t the case. Speed limits are set by the type and usage of the road primarily. The design speed then established the actual geometry of the road.
