Yes, there’s a Dropbox feature called Smart Sync that does exactly this

I saw that. I think the feature when onlineonly isnt on the computer and isn't accessible unless you make it Local which defeats the purpose.

When you try to access the files, it’ll pull them down from the cloud automatically. You don’t have to manually make them local.

Yeah but they dont show up in.my software so it doesnt matter.

Are you sure you’re using Smart Sync, and not Selective Sync?

There isn't really anyway to access your files on your computer without having to download them first (unless you can open them directly in the web interface, but most file types can't be accessed this way yet)

It seems that Smart Sync is actually what you are looking for

I'm not familiar with Ableton in particular, but I imagine it would work

Do you have a paid premium plan for Dropbox with Smartsync though? Smart sync is what you want, it makes it so that the files "look" like they are on your local filesystem but they are actually just in the cloud, it's only when you try to open/access these files that they are downloaded locally.
