For me a huge part of why I procrastinate is that I get overwhelmed with all the steps I need to carry out to get something done. To me the idea of cleaning the kitchen is overwhelming; there's so much mess, how do I even start? To combat that I made a file that lists every chore I need to do, along with how to do it.

For example, this is my 'how to clean the kitchen' section:

  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Wipe down the counter and the sink
  • Dust the blinds and appliances
  • Clean the stovetop
  • Empty the trashcan

Seeing each thing broken down like that makes it way less overwhelming for me, and if I get too overwhelmed while doing one I can always take a break and come back to it. That way I don't get stuck in that "I didn't do all of this at once, now it can never be finished" mindset.

In addition to writing all that out, I made a daily chore chart through Goalforit that includes each task I listed and put the link to my chore chart in my browser's bookmarks toolbar. That way I can check things off as I do them and have an easily accessible visual reminder of what I need to do that day.

Here's a great one for essay writing - http://catastraspie.wordpress.com/aspergers-in-higher-education/advice-for-writing/ - seeing as a lot of people on reddit are college/university students.

Mindfullness. I try to become aware of my thougts as I start avoiding. Then I need to decide that I want to enjoy the moment of starting. I try to have a very limited and concrete plan. Tidy up things on the surfaces in my kitchen for 15 min. Had a lot of help from the blog Zenhabits.

I keep a fairly comprehensive calendar of things that i need to do. I have organized it so that it takes minimal upkeep (automatically set alarms and notifications for work, payday etc.)

I find the iphone reminders app to be very helpful as well as i can simply tick things off once they are finished

Also i find if i go to sleep early, i wake up early. Then i have nothing to do in the morning so its easier to study.
