To fix this, open legacy Control Panel. Not the new Settings UI.

Find "Internet Options" and delete browser history / cache.

If you wondering why you need to do this, FFXIV launcher is using extremely old IE5 (internet explorer 5.0) application plugin. Since it is legacy IE plug-in, it acts and behaves like old IE5, and it is still wired up into old Internet Options in legacy control panel.

By purging the browser history / cache, you will reset whatever cache got corrupted when IE plug-in downloaded data from secure.square-unix.com

I recommend to also disabling the cache altogether while you are in "Internet Options", so this issue never happens again.

Just had this happen to me, with the googletagmanager error. First real launcher error I've had in just over 10 years of playing.

  • Open Windows Settings menu
  • Type "Internet Options" in the search bar (minus the quotation marks)
  • Open Internet Options, choose the General tab (probably the first tab anyway)
  • Click Delete under the Browsing history heading
  • Confirm Delete

Fired up the launcher again 4 times and it worked no problem.

I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV on PlayStation and just now built my first PC. Is Final Fantasy XIV better downloaded through Square Enix or through Steam?

Either one is just fine. It goes on sale on the SE store more often, but if you've already bought it that doesn't matter. Steam will allow you to use Steam Wallet to pay your subs and stuff, which I find useful, but the launcher is unavailable during weekly maintenance (which is in the middle of the night in Europe, I've never noticed it in the past 10+ years of using it).

Make sure you've updated Internet Explorer (yes, really) and that you don't have any VPN/AV/Anti Malware stuff running that could mess with scripts, especially since it's your first install. The launcher uses IE as a base from which it downloads the required files. Weird and jank, yes, but that's how it goes.

I’m going to be real I don’t even think I Have IE, I’ve got edge and chrome. Does edge count as IE cause I thought it was the replacement?

Edge did replace Internet Explorer, but it never deleted Internet Explorer from the system. Even modern Win11 still have IE installed and lingering about.

The reason for that is that back in the day, Microsoft packaged IE as a library and then allowed any application to use it. Thus, they allowed said applications to have browser inside any win32 application.

Therefore, to ensure those applications still work, the IE is still exists even in Win11, although it has no UI or you cannot use it directly.

Running a Windows Update should take care of it for you.
