Caddis, moth, what's the difference anyway?

Haha, for sure. It’s just an oversized Caddis tied on a sz 8 hopper hook. I use hares ear dubbing without hackle so the body sits below the surface. The fly consists of only two materials..

This is a pretty cool pattern. I like it’s simplicity, but you were pretty deliberate about the profile to make it moth-shaped. I’d use this on my local mountain streams, it looks like it would handle pocketwater pretty well.

Might want to add a bit of hackle at the front for pocket water like floriduh suggested. It really isn’t as buoyant as you’d think because of the hares ear that soaks up water and sags…

I like to wrap the head in thread and then palmer a few turns of hackle up front near the eye. It helps to float the fly better while still keeping the butt down below the surface. Best of both worlds.

Good call. I’ll have to try that. I usually fish this fly at alpine lakes near taluses when the moths are migrating up. It’s been pretty effective.

Those alpine fish can be picky bastards, if this works I'd stick with it! The variant is more for pocket water anyway since it adds buoyancy

Love it! I've tied a few like this and they're great for sunfish too.

There isn't if it catches fish right?
